Simple Green and carb rubbers?

#1 Post by JonW » Sat Oct 21, 2017 8:30 pm

Ive read various reports of using Simple Green on carb rubbers (with boiling?) to make them supple again, but while we have some of the Simple Green range in Aus, I wouldnt know which one to use, any advice, pics or ideas with this would be greatly received, ta!

Oil of wintergreen and xylene, I don't remember the ratio but it is easily found online. Don't leave it in too long at first, it will swell up but once the xylene goes away it will return to normal and be supple and minty fresh. Kart racers use this to soften tires. If you do this in the house you will get in trouble.

Cool, thanks!

Ok, I can buy xylene it seems, so thats good: https://www.bunnings.com.au/diggers-1l- ... t_p1668758" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

the oil of wintergreen seems to only be sold in small amounts and is silly expensive here, hmm...

I went to my GM dealer and obtained silicone emulsion. This product is used, by car dealers, on the car door rubber gaskets when they start getting hard and squeek against door frames - makes them supple. Cheap fix I used on my carb rubbers Jon. Takes time to soak in a couple of applications. I actually use Simple Green to clean rubber bits as it cut grease and is not a petrolem based product. Use Simple Green to, with a sonic gun cleaner bath, to clean my carbs. Simply good stuff.

Also cosider the fact that the (chemicals/cleaners) alone are likkey to cost $20-$30.00 U.S. dollars, I just did a quick search on E Bay, and found a brand new set if carb rubbers for $37.00.
Time is $ ?
Might be a viable option.

Jon

We have a product called Rubber Care and is safe to use Xylene is a known carcinogen

Works well and is also silicone free so its not going to upset the painters
