Vforce Reed chip Question

#1 Post by evan_calgary » Sun Dec 31, 2017 7:14 pm

Looking at a set of Vforce 4's. There is a small chip top corner of one reed petal. Likely 3-5mm in size.

Owner said this was from install. Not sure this sounds right.

Wondering if this chip will lead to further and if a new petal is required?

Further chipping could lead to hard carbon slivers in my main bearings correct?

Thanks Jon. That was my thought as well. Maybe if it wasn't directly in line with the crank I would risk it but expensive potential damage.

Yeah Im not 100% sure just how much damage carbon fibre in the crank bearings would do, Im thinking less than steel as it would get chopped up pretty quickly, but I would suggest that a chipped petal is not the place you want to start with a set of reeds, did you scope out what a reed petal costs from Vforce? I doubt they'd be cheap, but one can hope?

Looks like about US60 per reed. Deal breaker for me.

What sort of prices does Tony charge then please ?

I have always used V3 and V4 reed blocks but beginning to think if using standard blocks with carbon reeds would be more cost effective without too much loss in power ?

Try TDR's fiber reeds. I ran them for years and never an issue. I see no advantages in carbon reeds. it's not like a poppet valve where weight is a consideration. Stiffness is the key and weight is nil. TDR's RZ reeds are available straight from TDR or John @ Economy Cycle sells them as well.

And also on ebay i think?

I dont think standard cages would flow quite the same as the Vforce, but would be cheaper. You can run banshee grp reeds as well if worried about the old steels.

TDR makes replacement reed petals for the v-force 4 in both carbon or fiberglass.

Just looked on TDR's site, full set of 8 petals for the vf-4 is $65(fiberglass) and $80(carbon)

Not sure why you'd even consider carbon here. Unless the casing is a different stiffness. Maybe Tony will comment.

The OEM VForce reeds are carbon, you'd replace them with the same I would think.
