Opening Throttle junction

#1 Post by evan_calgary » Wed Feb 14, 2018 8:46 pm

Hi All,

Anyone had success here opening the carb junction boxes? I have a number of RZ cables and a lack of TZR cables. I popped the ends off the junction box and it looks like once they are together they are not meant to be taken apart. Is this the case?

Any one had success running a cable with damage to the nib that locates the upper part of the throttle cable? Would some gorilla glue do the trick?

It's time to find someone who builds cables. I need to learn this skill.

This part isn't that straight forward rory...I am looking at the plastic cable junction where the single throttle cable becomes 2 cables to the carbs and one to the oil pump. The internals of this junction are where I am trying to see if I can modify. I have good RZ cables but the TZR has another junction box that provides oil when the throttle is off but the pvs are open to prevent seizing.

I have pried them open, but it resulted in a junk junction box. I believe they are either glued, or sonically welded at the cap.
tuned to Paris Hilton specs............rich and retarded!

I just opened one up yesterday, the caps on both ends just snap on to the body and can be pried off carefully with a wide screwdriver or scraper. Would not recommend doing this while below zero in a northern garage in winter. The connector piece has a cap on the throttle cable side to hold the other 3 cables fixed in the connector. It is held on to the connector with 3 little nubs that are probably melted over slightly to keep the 2 pieces together. It popped off easily and the whole assembly would be reuseable, but you would have to add the internal cap piece to the end of the throttle cable before feeding it through the liner and soldering the barrel on the top end.
You could cut a narrow slot in it offset from the other cables and just slip it on the cable end without affecting its function. The cable pulls on the connector body, not the cap. Use a soldering iron to melt the nubs back over and you are done. Depending on the type of plastic you may not find an adhesive that will work well.
Note that the RZ splitter has a max pull of 30mm if you are thinking of using it with larger carbs.

Thank you for the help. I may have to give this a shot. I took the splitter apart but the junction box being fixed scared me a bit. figured I would rather not trash it before at least asking the question!

Cheers
Evan.

You could also use a splitter from a BSA;

If you have unused cables around, I understand not wanting them to be wasted. Could actually be fun to modify them.

Depends how valuable your time is, but one custom cable is not too expensive. Motion Pro made a very nice throttle cable for my RZ (with a splitter) to my specs. It's been a long time, but I remember their prices were reasonable.

Someone was telling me the other day that the earlier RDs had seperate cables and the splitter could be bought separately, ive never owned one of those models but maybe someone here has the info on that setup, maybe it'd work here?

Motion Pro made me a 'custom' (cos they didnt list the XL500R in their catalogue) single choke cable back in 2012 from the one i sent them, it was waaay too expensive for what it was, it didnt really work properly either as it didnt lock like the OEM. I was not impressed with what they did at all. :(
