Oil pump removal

#1 Post by LC Cnd » Fri Mar 30, 2018 7:41 pm

Went to install a refurbished oil pump from Arrow. Removed one retaining screw and went to the bottom one only to find the head stripped (err). Attempted to use needle nose vise-grips on the damaged screw head; they just slipped off continuously. Thought of punching it but thought I'd damage the casing. Attempted to move the pump counter clock wise - no movement. Too tight for a hacksaw blade. Suggestions?

Try the next size up JIS driver, sometimes they grip better being wider. Arrow mentioned these are philips OEM.

Worked Jon -thx & replaced. Just getting the old gasket off and she'll be done after bleeding. Tricky bit that but can't be worst than the brakes.

Impact driver comes in handy here too, then replace with socket head cap screws (allen bolts).

Always cringe when I see those JIS. I now don't even touch them without giving them a smack with the impact first. Doesn't help if previously stripped though! Drilling the heads off works well but of course you would have to take off the side cover to get at the nib.

Use a JIS driver Evan, they come out no trouble at all...

Premix?

JIS are the biz. Much better purchase than crappy Philips.

Used premix for the break in period. Now looking forward to using the pump now that the sunny weather has arrived! Itching.

Have JIS bits. Still far too tight on many engines and strip. Depends on the age and previous owner.

Allen much preferred and swap over after removal. JIS head to the bin.

I have no idea what JIS screws are. I'll have to look those up.

Its the Japanese standard for 99% of the screws on our bikes, they are not Phillips. Have a google, but you'll then know why our screws are all trashed by philips screwdrivers...
