Do I use both exhaust gasket types? YPVS F2

#1 Post by kjellz » Sat May 26, 2018 5:52 pm

Hi

Do I actually use both the "fibre" gasket and the brass ring with the o-ring inside at the same time?
What do you guys use for non-stock pipes to get a good seal? Mine are Figarolis which barely allows the flange nuts to enter 3-4 threads and does not even protrude through when using brass ring only.

Any recommendation for a set of slightly longer studs in such cases, and in particular if recommended to use both gaskets as stock drawing suggests.

I use both in mine, with non-stock expansion chambers.

Thanks, will try the gaskets and rings then. Just need to mod the studs/nuts somehow to make enough of the nut's threads engaging the studs. These gaskets where never there since I got it, and I've always thought the seal was not that good…

The big ring will compress as you tighten the clamp. Don't overdo it or you'll bend the clamp.

You could replace the studs with bolts.

After investigating a little closer, the flange of the Figarolis does not allow the use of the gasket pos 10 at all. The hole flange/spigot arrangement is very poor and hard to make a good seal and difficult to fit correctly centred etc.
I thus wonder if there is another pipe brand's flange/spigots which utlizes both stock gaskets correctly that would fit?
The OD of the Figaroli spigots are 38mm.
I put up a "wanted" add here as well viewtopic.php?f=11&t=15522" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Thanks.

So you are looking for a different "foil" (diamond shaped) gasket and not the ring?

I have always tossed the foil disposable shit, and used hand made gasket paper tracings of the same. No leaks.

Maybe find some gasket paper and cut your own?

In a pinch I have used hi-temp (copper) sealant when I could not get my hands on a gasket. Lasted until I took the pipes off again, about 2000km. [smilie=ok.gif]

Here are some photos to further illustrate the problem with the Figarolis;

The face of the flange is just flat and does not center nor seal properly as it is simply pressed against the inner half of the copper ring. (smaller diameter)

The retainer ring is pressing on a distance piece, making the fibre gasket of no use either.

So, if there is a better fitting flange "system" with a 38 mm pipe interface available out there I would like to know. My only other reference is the stock ones, that has a raised face flange and a very sturdy cylinder retainer bracket that makes use of the fibre gasket as a secondary seal it seems.

I can't see your pictures, just the picture name, but it sounds like the same problem I had with aftertermarket pipes. The spigot flange was smaller than the flat gasket (#10) and was not heavy enough to compress the copper ring (#9) without bending and still leaving a gap to the cylinder. I traced one of the gaskets on some 1/8" aluminum sheet to make a spacer and used that in place of the gasket with high temp silicone on both sides. I still use the copper ring.

I can see the pics.

If it were me I would have someone bore out the flange to the OD of the mating surface part of the joiner and weld it flush. Like a top-hat shape. Get longer springs if needed.

Does that joiner pipe fit inside the cutout where copper gasket sits? Looks almost like it was meant not to use any stock gasket, as a silly as that sounds.

@Nokturnal
Yes the joiner pipe flange does actually fit inside the cylinder cutout where the copper ring sits. But as you say it would not be a good idea to try. However, the pipes may have been delivered with some sort of special seal back then but I have no clue if anything is missing.

And since it is all very "sloppy" made, the retainer ring does not to centre the flange either, and since the flange iself is flat, with no raised surface to guide against the copper ring I can not make it seal or position well enough.

If I had a set of flanges/necks from a scrapped pair of stock pipes I could perhaps weld the joining pipe piece in place…...
