Yep. Pry it out with a screwdriver, Clean up the shaft etc.. Grease the lips of the new seal, I always put a little plastic wrap on the end of the shaft to the lips wont get damaged, Slide in the seal and tap it in till its flush with the case.

I've done it more than once as well, as above but it helps if you can find something the same diameter to drive it straight in pushing on the OD.

There must be a knack as I end up distorting the seal !

So it can be done then

Think I need to find something wide enough to drift it in then rather than trying to tap it round the edges

I've done it a few times by taking a variable speed drill (makita battery powered) and a small drill bit to drill a hole (@ slow speed) in the old seal being very careful and not pressing too hard, so when the drill bit goes through you don't drill into the metal bearing on the other side. I drill 2 holes 180 degrees apart. Then take a wood screw and screw in a tiny bit. Just enough to grab the seal as you don't want to go too far and metal out on the other end. Then pull w/ locking pliers. I tap the new seal in w/ a similar sized socket of matching diameter w/ a plastic coated dead-blow hammer. <--Might find a bit of PVC? (failing the socket) or an old RD400 pipe(rubber seal side) to tap in the new seal? *if i remember correctly*. Would look pretty funny from an observers perspective. Whatever works.

You may be able to use a piece of ABS pipe the right size as a drift. Put a piece of wood over the end you are hitting with the hammer.
