WATER PUMP BEARING QUESTION

#1 Post by vmx51 » Sun Oct 14, 2018 3:33 pm

I just bought a new water pump bearing , genuine Yamaha for my 85 RZ350. On the old bearing , the balls are exposed both sides.
On the new bearing there is a form of shield on one side. You can still see the balls through slots in the shield. Does it matter what way it goes in ??....thanks

I would install with the shield-side facing the water pump seal and the balls exposed to trans oil. Unless someone else has an engineering reason to reverse that call.

Is it a metal or rubber shield?

I agree with brrrappp, that logic makes sense.

It looks like plastic , but it has radial slots in it , so you still see the balls. the old one I took out was open both sides.

If you're worried about the shield, remove it.

The O.P. didn't post a picture of the bearing, but I think what he is seeing is the plastic that is used to keep the balls properly spaced between the races. I don't think what he is describing is a shield at all.

In any event, if it looks like it would in any way restrict oil from lubricating the bearing, then face that side toward the water pump seal. The bearing is lubricated by being open to the oil in the transmission.

No , it is a shield , flush with the ouside face of the bearing. Not the cage that keeps the balls properly spaced. I am pretty familiar with most types of bearing , just never seen one like this. It is factory Yamaha too

This bearing https://www.cmsnl.com/yamaha-rz350-1985 ... 8S9peTQaUk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The plastic is meant to retain the grease inside. That being said, as far as I am aware, that retainer should face the outside.

And as already mentioned, if you are truly concerned with it remove the retainer and use it as the original bearing was installed.

That's not a shield that's a plastic cage that keeps the balls spaced. It's a very common type also .
