Is the Push/pull throttle cable necesary?
Got my goodies from Spec II this weekend (Flanges, jets, intake and other goodies) and got it all on and fired up on the bench. I guess the jetting specs that Gary gave me are time tested because it fired up second kick purred like a kitten at idle and after a fairly aggressive warmup on the bench the plugs were nothing scary to look at. Very very quick revving now as the gods intended. Should ride it today after work.. anyway.. quick question. Is the push-pull return cable on the stock carb at all necessary? It's a total PAIN to connect and the return springs seem to have plenty of bounce. Never seemed to be an issue with the aircoolds even whn heavily modded. There doesn't seem to be a much of a chance of those 26mm carbs slides hanging up vs those springs. Is this a US nanny state safety thing like I've heard or does it serve a real purpose other than to annoy me.

They didn't come on the 86+ bikes. That proves how useful they were.FloridaSteve wrote: There doesn't seem to be a much of a chance of those 26mm carbs slides hanging up vs those springs. Is this a US nanny state safety thing like I've heard or does it serve a real purpose other than to annoy me.

That surprises me. I was under the impression that all slide valve equipped street bikes came with them, but that CV carbed bikes did not require them.silverstrom wrote: They didn't come on the 86+ bikes. That proves how useful they were.
Not that you can't run either setup without the closing cable. It's just there as a safety in case the throttle sticks you can manually force it closed.

Is the general consensus to remove these? I have a new one installed but feel if it operates well without, it could unclutter the carb cable area under the tank. Do you feel that it is good insurance in preventing your engine racing out of control into a meltdown?
Re: Is the Push/pull throttle cable necesary?
I got tired of hassling with that return cable so off it went. I wound the spring one or two turns tighter to help snap it back. No problems after a summer of riding.

I found the throttle action feels better with the Single wire white plastic throttle tube fitted.( it was a Fairly universal Yama part ).
That said; unless you have one handy, not a big deal either.
