Yeah I've ridden it the way intended. Sounded great. Derestricted I chucked it on the dyno. 60hp great curve. Obviously it's still a 250.
Last time he rode his 500 he made it a little less standard. I was behind him but fortunately didn't follow him over the side on my 350. That was 20 years ago, it's been a long project.
Also has a NSR mc21 which is cool to ride.

Been a while since I've been on this side.
My RZV project took a back seat for about 9 months after I found out I had to rebore it and rebuild both cranks.
The new year brought out a new attitude towards it, and I have started working on it again.
Pistons going in onto the newly rebuilt cranks this week....pics soon to follow.

I always wanted one of those RZ 500's since I first saw one in the parking lot at Unadilla back in 1984. That desire is tempered somewhat by the level of complexity needed for maintenance and restoration. That engine, with all of those parts is intimidating!

Out in the sun today
I had to get some time in on the TZR, to make sure most of the bugs have been worked out of it....

It still needs a complete rebuild at some point, but runs good at the moment....(both cylinders show 165psi compression)
I have a Sugo kit 3XV-80 ignition box and a set of SPR airboxes to completely unrestrict it. The OX pipes on it are copies of the Sugo kit pipes.
Should be a screamer when dialed in....

Do you have a particular contact in Japan where you find your bikes? Did you have it air-freighted or did it come by ship? I'm curious about the process of buying a bike from Japan and having it imported. I imagine there's a fairly hefty risk factor... getting a bike with no engine internals for example.

I have been using the services of Naomi with Spongebob/Miyabee for the past 7 years or more now.
A breaker in Japan, who will help find a bike, or help to buy a bike you find....or get parts
No matter how you do it....it is a risk. Usually only some small pictures of a bike thousands of miles away. (the same with used parts)
I have come to expect that even if the bike does run, it will need a complete rebuild before really using the bike.
So plan for that and you will not be as disappointed when you see the bike in person.
The TZR was bought as a non runner, as the description only stated that the engine would kick over (not start)
I got lucky and found that the choke lever was broken off....these will not start usually without a choke... It actually saved the bikes life, as it sat for a number of years then unused.
New lever and cleaned the carbs.....fired right up....and then the waterpump seal gave up and I had to pull the trans to get to the seal....
Fixed that along with every new seal that went into the clutch/trans....rode it for about 11 kilometers to make sure it was ok......then came the snow....
Which takes me to now....

Bikes are brought across on a ship, then trucked to a shipping/distributing company....somewhere in between it goes through all the paperwork, customs, and DOT/EPA crap.
I found my RZV and the TZR on auctions.yahoo, Naomi emailed me on my VJ23 asking if I was interested.

Thanks for the info. I was going to Japan for a couple weeks a year up until I retired about five years ago. I went to the motorcycle district in Tokyo, and really enjoyed looking at all the cool, and expensive!, parts. Never even thought of trying to find a bike to send back home.
