The two stroke side of my garage....

#1 Post by busa1300 » Mon Jul 08, 2013 7:43 pm

I picked this 72 GT750J up in April 2012, after it had sat in several barns, for several decades. After months of trying to take care of getting a legal title for it, I put it through a healthy restification. All original paint and chrome still, some NOS part here and there, new bearings all over the chassis, clean out tank and carbs...and so on....
And it smokes once again..... I have been riding it more this year than any of my other bikes....
Still looking for an original seat yet.....

I picked this up, because I wanted to learn how to drag my knee, back in 2006... since a TZ was a little much for a beginning track day bike. Used it twice, winter and then a divorce, pushed it into the darkness for quite a few years... But I fired it up again this year just so I could hear it again. And maybe by early fall, I can find time to get back to the track as I originally intended

I picked this NSR up in a package deal i got when I was looking for spare engines for my Aprilia. I bought this and a RGV. But once I got them both home, I knew I couldn't part out the RGV for the engine.......and this bike was just too cool to pass on to someone else. Rides like a 120 mph bicycle....super lightweight.... Needs some attention and a title, but runs as is

This bike is available if interested

This is the RGV, that has been my long term project...... In pieces for almost 6 years now. Every time I get money around for more parts, I end up using it for another project.... :smt012

Both this and the NSR, were home market bikes, then ended up in Australia for most of their beaten lifes, eventually ending up in a shed in West Virginia for some years...sitting with a RD500 in pieces. Obviously parts are difficult at best to find here in the States....but thats one reason I like strokers....they are different.

And last but not least.......My RZ.
This was the one that started my love for two strokes. Bought in spring of 85 as a used bike with 1200 miles on it, it was my secondary bike to my FJ1100 that I bought in 84. I went to Parker Yamaha, in Windsor Canada, in early 85 to look at the possibility of bringing in a new RZ500.... Short story...too much money for a 21 year old who just bought a new FJ 8 months earlier. and the thought of an impound on a bike with no title shut the deal for good...
So I bought this.... Lots of work done on it a month after I bought it. I was beating it severely and twisted the crank. So I pulled it apart and sent it out to SPEC II for a stage 3 tune, with Toomey pipes an on and on and on..... Time to get it recommissioned, as it has not been plated since 1989.... Just got some period correct Dymags for it, so now I'm on a roll to using it again soon.

Sweet!! That's a great collection you got there, got me drooling on my keyboard.... What pipes are them on the GT750? Your RZ looks fantastic! Usually I like the stock paint colors but I think you really pulled it off with that bike. What about the old hot rod with the blower and two four barrel carbs? I see old GSXR1100, FZR1000?, Katana, Nice looking rims on the shelf above the work bench too! Awesome bikes, Thanks for sharing!!! :smt023

Thanks for enjoying....It's taken some years to get them all under one roof. The wheels are magnesium EPM's, with Kosman 13 inch cast iron early style floating rotors, that I plan on swapping out on my GS1000. It has EPM's on it now, but the front is a 19....the one on shelf is an 18.

I am undecided on repainting the RZ back to original.... normally, if I would have bought it with the paint thats on it, I would take it back to original. But I painted this myself back in 85, with the ZZ top Eliminator in the back of my head. So, it's kind of period correct.... Any thoughts out there on paint?

Pipes on the GT are all factory 3 into 4.....

I'm sitting here looking at the rz pic, thinking what is out of place.
Now that you mentioned the zz top style paint & the coupe behind it, it makes sence now lol.
Very nice collection esp the nsr....

I used to attend all the zero gravity RS250 cup races @ Willow Springs, just to watch the last of the 2 strokes. They are such a great small bike, people talk a lot about the NSRs ,RGVs etc.. there great bikes but the RS is a pretty nice all around package, I think will one day be worth a decent amount of money. For some reason, they seem a little unfairly..underated. I had a chance to ride a RS250 cup bike for a few laps once at a track day, just average speed as it wasn't my bike and extreme ring rust on my part. I gotta say, made quite a good impression especially when comparing from my memory of my RZs. what a difference 10 years made! in the 2 stroke world.

Also I love the water buffalo! There used to be this old man whom had one that lived down the street from me, OH GOD was it the absolute personification of UGLY..he had a HUGE Vetter/ Windjammer style fairing mounted on it, a luggage rack over the rear and the TALLEST sissy bar you have ever seen :smt003 :smt023 Yours does the model justice! especially in that particular color :smt023

Lol, I've never heard the term water bottle, kettle I just picked up on a decade or so ago, heres 1st paragraph from wikepedia

The prototype Suzuki GT750 was shown at the 17th Tokyo Motor Show in October 1970[6] and launched in Japan in September 1971 as a sports tourer (GT standing for Grand Tourismo) and was developed from the Suzuki T500 with an extra cylinder and liquid cooling. Marketed as the Le Mans in the US and Canada, it was nicknamed the "Kettle" in Britain and the "Water Buffalo" in the United States.[7] The GT750 was heavy at 550 lbs, with a 739 cc two-stroke three-cylinder engine with 70 mm bore and 64 mm stroke. It had a five-speed gearbox and three-into-four exhaust.

When I picked up the GT, it had a fairing/forward foot pegs/the ugly seat which is still on it/and a big rack on back with real tall back rest. When my girl friend first saw it, she said it was the ugliest mess I have ever bought. After a few days of stripping the non factory parts off, then looking at the parts I would need to get it back to normal spec...headlight and bucket/turn signals/new wiring harness... and a good clean up..... She began to like it. After I got it running and took her for a ride....she said it could be her favorite bike. Now that I have it in presentable shape, she says this investment is now a permanent keeper. It is a December 1971 build date, so it is one that needs to stay original, although I originally bought it, to make a cafe racer out of it. If someone was to tell me a few years ago, I would be riding a pink/purple bike with a drum front brake, I would have told them to **** off. Now, I ride a pink bike, every chance I get.

Remember Parker Bros. well, use to buy parts for my 500 there. They closed that place and some staff formed a company making riding gear and called it Joe Rocket.

More buffalo...........

A 1972 J model frame I have had up in the rafters for quite a while, together with a GS1100 swing arm ......and a GS1000 hub laced to a aluminum drag bike rim,,,,,...with the heart of a Water Buffalo that I just picked up and hauled home.
Looks like another long term two stroke project to torture me......
The cafe racer I planned on, when I got my first GT750
