Re: Isle of Man TT 2016
Located a 1980 Circuit magazine article featuring Charlie Williams's back to back wins on a RD350LC/RD250 at the IOM TT on pages 10-11. Also the magazine (Pg 22) on the track testing of the up coming RD350LC. The track photo shows the bike's tank decal taped out for the road test and the feature photo with the 4L0 with only one front disk brake. The writer stated Yamaha was excited to advise the 350 would have two. Google circuit august/september 1980 charlie williams for the PDF. Also Found Charlie Williams winning RD350, in the RD350LC 1980 TT poster noted above, is now on display at Phil Morris's "Oswestry Road Racing Museum" (will be an outstanding visit). The video shows the bike at 7:19 mins. link at

Here's the attached info on Charlie's winning bike.

Re: Isle of Man TT 2016
The other good option is to fly to Dublin. Its a 30 min. cab ride from the Airport to the Ferry. I've done that a couple of times.Hooligan wrote:Fly to London and rent a bike there. The ride to Liverpool is not onerous and gives you a chance to see a bit of English countryside and get used to driving on wrong side of the road. Personally I wouldn't take my LC to the TT. It is an unforgiving place with lots of high speeds.
The ferry trip over is not to be missed. It is just as entertaining as anything you will see on the island.
The two times I went, we camped out in Union Mills. The camping is excellent and much cheaper than trying to find a room. You do not need a reservation to camp but you will need to arrange a room prob a year in advance.
I had to go to Microsoft in Dublin on a business trip in 2013. I stayed a couple of extra days and rented an R1200GS from this company - http://www.motorental.ie/index.php/our-rental-bikes" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - They were reasonable and the bike was in really good condition. I'm not sure what their policy is on taking it out of country though.
As Hooligan said you almost need to arrange lodgings and the ferry a year in advance.
Re: Isle of Man TT 2016
I agree - short listed for a hotel stay prior to X-mas but have to wait after IOM 2015 for confirmation to see if a previous guest opts out. Working on a plan b plus ferry reservations. Working on a international driver's licence. Bike is 1/2 way done. Dublin is an interesting option vs. Liverpool - thx for the info.

You don't need an Intl Drivers Licence. You CDN one will be fine.LC Cnd wrote:I agree - short listed for a hotel stay prior to X-mas but have to wait after IOM 2015 for confirmation to see if a previous guest opts out. I have rented cars and bikes in EU and driven/ridden all over western EU without ever needing an Intl Licence.

Re: Isle of Man TT 2016
I believe you only need the international licence if you are going to live there for an extended period.

Re: Isle of Man TT 2016
intl driving licences are a bit of a scam i think. you dont need one for anywhere Ive been as most licences are reciprocal, unless you have some very bizarre small country one. Most countries allow you to live in a new place for up to a year before you have to get their licence, some places its longer.

Re: Isle of Man TT 2016
Hmm. I'll look into that. An international licence is $25. Currently reading Rick Broadbent's "That Near-Death Thing" subtitle Inside the TT: The World's most Dangerous Race (2012). 1/2 way through. Amazed at the humble beginnings of most of the top drivers.

And amusingly:
(from: http://www.iamintheuk.com/1173/driving- ... n-license/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; )
"Canadian driving licence
When exchanging your Canadian driving licence you will only be able to drive automatic vehicles. To be able to drive manual vehicles, you will need to provide acceptable proof from the issuing authority or an approved driving school showing that a manual car test was passed."

Re: Isle of Man TT 2016
Yes, very amusing, since we don't have a manual test to pass.
Mind you, about 98% of the cars and trucks on the road are automatic.

Re: Isle of Man TT 2016
Ahh I see. In Aus you can take either and if you take Auto then you cant drive a manual, of course. Im not sure what the uk has now, but when i did mine I think there was only a manual test.
