Re: E - gp racing
And the crowds roars as the bikes go past with a loud woosh…..and a tiny whine.....
I've watched Formula-E racing and it is not as exciting as you might imagine. Isn't the outrageous sound part of the racing experience? I'll never be one to retrain myself for nearly silent racing at any speed. It as much fun as watching drone racing.

Yeah, Im with you. I like the idea of an electric bike to whizz (whine?) into the city on, but for racing... well... its a bit, welll; quiet.
I think hblair was there for this lap, perhaps he has a view?

The thought of E-bikes, E-cars and E-everything reminds me of a little ditty from 1981.

"Run like the wind as excitement shivers
Up and down my spine
But down in his barn
My uncle preserved for me
An old machine
For fifty-odd years
To keep it as new
Has been his dearest dream
I strip away the old debris
That hides a shining car
A brilliant Red Barchetta
From a better vanished time
We'll fire up the willing engine
Responding with a roar
Tires spitting gravel
I commit my weekly crime
Wind
In my hair
Shifting and drifting
Mechanical music
Adrenaline surge
Well-oiled leather
Hot metal and oil
The scented country air
Sunlight on chrome
The blur of the landscape
Every nerve aware"

Ive seen the EBikes at the TT and they are just boring, No noise, roar etc, You cant hear them screaming through the corners, trees etc, You spend half the time talking and bullshitting with your TT mates and then... Whoosh..... Oh!!! Another one went by!!

Re: E - gp racing
I was in Los Angeles for A month and saw a custom Yamaha GT1000 hub centered swingarm front end, it had a custom high power electric motor conversion...it was all custom and pretty... Wicked!
E bikes are getting popular..and there pretty damned quick too w the instant tq.
Once I saw a Tesla S blow the doors off a 2016 Corvette, and a Ferrari...and a Hellcat Challenger, I was sold 100% on the E cars power. We're talking 6-8 car lengths and the Dodge was essentially dead in the water from wheelspin ...perhaps 20-30 car lengths back.. simply hysterical.
Electric offers just stunning performance..
BUT I too prefer THE SOUND......Nothing like the gear whine or
The sound of a high strung 7-8000 + RPM car engine, or bikes that sing to 15,000 rpm....But the low Harley Potato.. Potato sound is awesome too!
I wouldnt mind having an electric bike, as long as the styling was let's say "Tron" style, or reminiscent of the Suzuki NUDA, IMO the best concept bike I've ever viewed..if only they made that. I'd love to have had a Gilera hub steering bike..they never had them here...too bad 2 Stroke futureistic.

Re: E - gp racing
Can you see someone 30-40 years from now resurrecting a Tesla Model S, replacing the batteries, rewinding the motors etc.? Restoring it like people restore the vehicles of the 60's and 70's? No, they are appliances and will end up in the same pile as old washing machines and microwaves. Electric vehicles won't be reborn and live on because they have no soul. Sure they are damn fast and fun to drive now, but give it 5-10 years. Everyone has an old laptop that you can't leave unplugged for 2 hours, and you don't buy a new battery because it costs too much. Multiply that by 1000.
...and to brrrappp, that song came out about the same time as our RZ's, and the lyrics have more meaning now than then.

Re: E - gp racing
Experienced launch control in a Model X with all the bells and whistles.
Amazing, especially considering it's quicker than the same owner's McLaren 650S.

Re: E - gp racing
I had a VW eUp as a company car and right now I have an eGolf.
Both are incredibly fun to drive around town and I'd love to have that in a road or race bike.
Two years ago I participated in a Kart event with electric Karts and inside a building I didn't miss neither sound nor the exhaust fumes ....
It was really fun to ride except that the race direction could castrate ALL participants at once to pedestrian speed if someone crashed :-(
When I'm on track with the bike, it's usually Kart tracks with 20-30 min heats going around with max 120 kmh. That'd be VERY feasible for an electric application.
Only issues: Commercially available bikes like the Zeros lack performance and I'd need 3 or 4 battery packs for a day of riding (as there's only weak supply). Both will end up in a very expensive one-off build for which I'm not yet ready.
But actually I have a friend for whom I have built frame conversion to electric drive (off road bikes). He's luckier than me as in off road you'd get away with far less performance.
He also managed to get permission by the local authorities to open a new off road track solely for e-bikes which would be completely impossible with combustion engines.

Re: E - gp racing
Interesting points Martin, I believe that electrification is far more common in European cities than anywhere in North America The noise factor is interesting in that although it is a vital part of motorsports for many of us, it has also led to the closer of many tracks as urban sprawl engulfs them and people protest the noise they chose to build near (read all the hypocrisy into that statement that you want). This applies especially to dirt bikes that tend to be even noisier and irritating to 'non-enthusiasts'. I live in a rural community where it is common to see/hear ATV's, snowmobiles and dirt bikes traveling on the streets on the way to trails, but in the city it would not be allowed to happen.
The range and recharge requirements of plug in electric vehicles will likely make them impractical for my use for a long time.

Re: E - gp racing
For me it's not just the sounds of racing. My earliest racing experience was snowmobile racing in the mid 70's. Back when castor bean oils and leaded fuels were normal. That smell is something I looked forward to every weekend. Every now and then, someone will have castor oil and VP race gas at an MX event and I instantly feel 40 years younger!
Electric engines have a smell and it reminds me more of HVAC equipment or a server room than speed or fun.
