Two-stroke Tuner's Hand book

Recieved a very good copy of Gordon Jennings above noted book but wanted to know if its dated (circa 1972) for basic understanding of the topic or if there is a better updated version?

I have that book still and have had/have this book as well which I recommend. Both books are dated but have good concepts and mathematical tables.

Have a word with Glyn, he would be the person to recommend some more modern stuff I would think.

If you talk to him let everyone know what good newer stuff is available please. I've seen newer, but not necessarily better.

Very interesting book Steve. Math is really not my thing but reading your stuff and the 2 stroke tuners's hand book is giving me a new appreciation for the motor & the mathematics behind it. Had this been shown to me in high school, I would have pursued and engineering degree instead of languages. Just found the other tuners hand book in pristine condition.

You can't go wrong reading anything by Kevin Cameron either, although they are written more for interest than instruction.

Were power-valves for two strokes around in the 70s or did that start with the RZ?

Yes, about a decade before the RZ roadbikes, Yamaha started work developing various ideas, their designs 1st saw action in 1976-1977 on Yamahas race GP bikes, but the RZ350/500 YPVS I beleive was the 1st large scale production bike to utilize the system. Works then
& works now.
Any book "old or new" will teach you many things you want to learn. As far as newer vs old..Ill say the same thing, for RDs/RZs. Weve all listened to claims some mild, some rather brash regarding newer methods etc. Alot is not necesarily new ideas or better, but more refined and in depth work of ideas pioneered years ago some of which provide decent improvements.
One thing about most builder/tuners especially many a 2-stroke guy, they all talk the talk about their own designs and smack talk each others work. Cant tell you how many times many of uave listened to some tuner ramble on, saying that n this are old news, or it wont work, or is designed inferior etc....then sometimes that machine out performs theirs... lol Most will claim theirs is the best.
New guys were taught (most everything) they know by.... "a old guy".
Progression or refinement is inevitable to some degree & its all good for the hobby, and good to see there are still many, people out there still trying to maximize or exploit ideas from the past 50 years.

The first TZ250 with the power valve was 1979. A mechanical unit which was replaced with an electric unit in 1984. I had '77 and '78 TZ250 tall boys with mono shocks, no power valves and the last year of mechanical pv, an '83, with mono shock as well. So, the RZ350 beat the TZs to both electric power valve and a levered shock in 1983.
