Pro Am back fills

#1 Post by LC Cnd » Wed Sep 23, 2015 8:56 pm

Does anyone know anybody who has produced replicas of said item? Tried RDLC form - nothing. Appears they are rarer than the bikini fairing they are attached to. Thinking 3d printer.

This week got a response from a gent, in L.A., who quoted me a 'starting' price - ergo its gonna cost ya. Interestingly a lot of 3D printers are located near airports. Awaiting for a local quote. CNC machining quote was 10K due to the unique angles the back fills have.

Trouble would be getting your hands on one for measurements?

Measurements; no problem. Curious to know if anyone else had an adventure with a 3d printer for LC parts. Could be barking up the wrong ABS tree on this matter.

Curious why you don't just make one out of fiberglass, if you know the shape it would be fairly easy to produce. Once you have a mold you could make more and sell them.

I'm hoping to use plastic, ABS or PLA to keeps as close to the original parts as possible. Also toying with ABS paste. All new to me so I'm in the R&D stage right now. Not sure how its going to work out but its intriguing.

Heres what I'm hoping to replicate. Had three local (BC) responses and pondering the costs.

Amibtious desire but imo a decidedly odd one. Pro Am Fairings were laughable contraptions at best and Hideous at worst :-)

LOL @ bares response. I think they are a bit Marmite, and defo not for me, but others seem to love em.

FWIW LC Cnd, do ask on the uk forums as well as there will be takers for your repops on there, plenty seem to ask for them.

:-D your both right. LC beaut-a is in the eye of the restorer-beholder 4 sure. Its Pro-Am legacy that's the attraction. Yes, I've had some interest from GB. Bare thx for the tip - done. Where abouts in the LMD r u? Recently at Super Sports and found some LC bits there interestingly. Well, Bk 2 wk.

Try user 14CHEEKS on here, he has repro'd several different panels and is in the UK so may have easier access to some.
3D printing could work with the right material but you still need a CAD model to print so you need a sample to measure. Once you have the 3D file the cost shouldn't be too bad, material cost for that would be about $30, but the shape doesn't lend itself to some printers, which require 'support' for each successive layer (like a pyramid, base down works but pointy end down is difficult). SLS printers deal with this but may cost you more.

Rusty I've costed out the CAD issue and on the hunt for a printer company. May have a local gent, who's has a CNC machine for milling aluminum fishing reels, CAD the back fills. He's also looking into making me Micron fork brace brackets. Not cheap but might get a package deal out that.

Elsie - welcome to the 21st Century. Using a 3D Scanner to recreate a part (abet a Marmite one lol). Partnered up with a local gent and hoping to use ABS paste in the manufacture of the backfill. Intial attempt was made using script coding to automate the process - no luck. Went to hand stitching. The pic shows the angles in perspective mode as opposed to orthographic mode. Going to be interesting as to how this turns out with the 3D printer.
