Elsie questions
Re: Elsie questions
It has 5k-1needles and p-2 needle jets series 345. I'm gonna check with the local dealer and see if I can get the needle jets. May have to go with an needle from a kit. Main jets are new. Pilots are the originals and I will replace them anyways but the air screw sets up nicely. There is definitely erosion in the needle jets and I can see some wear on the needles. I think all of this added together is making it very rich!
Re: Elsie questions
Just reading the manual rd350 LC 4LO 100101 onwards 1.5 turns out on the air. And they went through a few changes to get to the needle and jet combination that you have. ( And the 5K-1 Needles are the best).
Although you say your very rich, I cant imagine that worn emulsion tubes and suggested needles are solely to blame, in-fact I wouldn't throw money at that just yet.
Come back to the middle clip and throw a 180 main jet in and see what happens. If it comes on the pipe, don't flog the shit out of it go up to say a 200 and see how that goes. You will find that just one slight change in a jet size when your close will be amazing.
The manual mentions blocked pipes, blocked air filter, previously mentioned in the thread.
The manual also refers to incorrect timing, electrical related issues, it also mentions HT lead insulation failure, and spark plug cap can result in poor running or lack of power at high speeds, but not noticeable at lower.
If its revs on the stand then I suspect that its not HT or spark issues.
I still think its fuel air related. Id come down 1 or two main sizes, and definitely come down if your at altitude.
Good luck with the local dealer, they are generally clueless when it comes to LC's and RZ's.

Re: Elsie questions
I put 200 mains in and needles at position 1. Didn't really make a difference. Now if I put the clips in 2nd position it is way worse! There is actual visible marks on the needles but only at the top where it would be in the idle to 1/4 throttle position. I still think it would clean out and run ok on top but it doesn't. The needle jets are on back order from yamaha. I've got them on order anyways. Likely won't get to try it again this season. Will be snowing soon. How long are the vent lines supposed to be on the sides of the carbs? I don't think it's a venting issue but you never know! The other thing I noticed is the boots between carbs and airbox are a little smaller in centre than the carbs! They look like they are made that way and I'm sure they are originally. I haven't ridden it without the boots on. It has original reeds in it but they are in good shape and it idles excellent so that can't be it. If the needle jets are eroded I'm not sure if that would affect it much at full throttle? It's worse if I pin it. These are such simple carbs that there can't be much go wrong other than jet erosion. This is what makes old bikes interesting!
Re: Elsie questions
The air correction circuit can become clogged & requires some disassembly to clean properly.
The sealing brass ball bearing has to be removed to allow full access.
AFAIK a small drill & an "easy out" are all that are required to remove the offending item, you will also need to remove the needle jet to check the circuit is clear.
To check spray carb cleaner into the jet & make sure a fine mist can be seen exiting the needle jet location area.
Once the circuit is clean the bearing can easily be replaced, if it is too badly damaged to be reused a small grub screw can be inserted.

Re: Elsie questions
I think you need to completely rule out main richness. By coming down 10 and not getting satisfaction is ok, keep at it.
You say its about to snow soon. Your either at altitude or are in thin air or both.
I think your safe to come to 180, middle clip and see what happens.
Fresh plugs?
Compression check?

He is not at elevation in Manitoba at all. Under 1000 ft above sea level for sure.
I am stumped too.

Re: Elsie questions
Has brand new pistons and crank seals. I have tried moving the timing and no change. It is in its original position. Timing will affect it but not this much. I've cleaned the carbs about 5 times. Last time was ultrasonic. It is cold here now so it should be going lean. The leaner I go on the needle the better it gets. I thought about the air emulsion passage also. Was hopin ultrasonic would take care of it. With that passage plugged in the throat where does it feed from? This is a different style needle jet than what most carbs use. I'm not talking about a stumble. The bike just gets on the pipe at 6000rpm if I just nurse the throttle then falls on its face. Either stupidly rich or losing ignition. Are these motors usually pretty finicky?

Re: Elsie questions
Is your tank rusty? ...on the roof, near the filler. A small telescopic mirror will give you a view with a flashlight. Do you have in-line fuel filters on? A must do with the old bikes.

Re: Elsie questions
I cleaned the screen in tank. Each time I've had carbs apart I've had no sediment in bowls. First thing I check is tanks for rust. This tank is really nice and shiny. I was worried about that when I first got it because it had been sitting so long. I'll check the roof of the tank tho! How do you guys resize pics?

Keep going and keep an eye on the plugs. Stick a 180 in and take it for a short run.

Re: Elsie questions
Tinkered around some more with my bike. Took the airbox lid and filter off and now it pulls good! Put the lid back on without the foam and it's dead again. Pulled the rubber out of the lid and tried again and it's no better. Either there's something happening when I put the lid on that's restricting it or there is something happening in the carbs. I have a plastic piece leftover but it looks like it goes under the seat. At least I know it's not a motor or ignition problem! Bike felt pretty strong when it revved. Gonna be a super fun bike to ride for sure!
