Another 4L0

#1 Post by DRC » Wed Oct 21, 2015 8:47 pm

Just bought another 82.

It had holed a piston so the guy parked it and then ended up selling the tank and side panels but its all there apart from that. The front fender and tail are white so I assume it was repainted at some time in its life

I pick it up next week so I will post some pictures.

Trying to decide what to do with it though. I have a completely standard 81 so I might try to do something a little different.

I have good RZ bottom end and barrels so I may use that instead of rebuilding the the LC lump. I always liked the Gary Sargent special on Norbo's site and I have a set of 84 RZ forks and 84 and 88 wheels so that may be a possibility. I'd do a lot more black around the motor though. I can always swap the standard wheels and forks back any time later.

I've also got a hankering for a Metmachex but I may be divorced after that :)

The other thing I'd like is a Gully seat. I've been on the lookout for one for years. I may look into just getting a copy cover or have an upholsterer do one in the same style provided it can be fitted to the regular base.

Anyway. I'm very excited

Sounds like a good project, I would go more modern with the wheels/suspension, but then, well... I would LOL!

The RZ bottom end opens up all sorts of opportunity with banshee parts, so can be a lot of fun...

the Gully seat... reading between the lines on norbos forum it seems that a copy is usually not done well, you really need to locate a real one as the base plastic is important to the shape. copy covers were available from an upholsterer guy who sells on ebay, but I think he doesnt list them now, only sells by word of mouth perhaps.

Hmmm....

It looks OK in the picture. I'd have to get new seat foam. For $80 it may be worth the risk, although I don't know how different the original base is.

Ck'd the ad and discovered the seller won't ship out of Britain unfortunately. Looks interesting however.

I finally managed to get around to the guys house and pick up the bike. I just need to find a tank.

Image

It’s all there with the exception of the tank and side panels. He also took the front brakes lines for something else he was working on but I got the throttle, master cylinder and rear brake rod with it. It even came with the original toolkit :)

The bike its self is in really good condition. Not a spot of rust but it’s very dusty from lying around. It’s an 82 so I believe it has been painted or the tail and front fender have been swapped out at some stage. I have an original white and blue 1981 in good condition so I think I’ll so something a little different with this.

I’m thinking yellow with black speed block decals.

I have a set of 84 RZ350 350 forks that I might use with some BlueSpot calipers and would love a Metmachex for the rear if I can get the wife to agree. I think they just look right on these bikes. I’d also like to try to find a Gully seat.

This motor holed a piston on the left hand side but I have a RZ350 motor that I’ve already rebuilt so I will probably use that.

Not too sure about the pipes though I like the look of large can Allspeeds and the black chrome version from Gibson look great, but I understand they don't perform the best. I'll have to think about that some more. Any recommendations would be great.

I’ll keep all the original parts so it can be restored to OEM later if I ever want to. Once I start I’ll start a build thread.

Is it possible that it is an 81 that was sold in 82?

its so complete and original looking (apart from missing the tank and side panels),it seems a shame to go the hybrid route.
but its your bike so have at it.

I have side panels and a Jap market tank that is in awesome shape.

If you are gonna paint it, I have a second set of side panels that need some fixes and paint anyway.
