Alloy LC tanks.

#1 Post by L.B » Fri Jan 08, 2016 1:55 am

Posting this on behalf of Fingermaus from Norbo's UK site, thought there might be someone interested in one....

Hi All

I emailed Holtworks last month just out of curiosity.

I explained the shortage of good tanks for the 4L1's and 4LO's and asked what sort of numbers would be needed for them to make copies. Took them a while as they're really busy, but they got back to me this week.

They said that they can make an exact copy of an original tank.A minimum order of 20 would be needed to get it off the gound for them to produce tanks at £520 each.

The ones they make for other bikes look really good and the lengthy lead times would indicate a healthy business making good products. Website and testimonials look great. There are the obvious pros and cons to Alloy tanks, but It's food for thought if no one's making decent steel copies and good ones are getting harder and harder to find. I suppose a good Alloy tank is better than no tank.

As I said, I did this out of curiosity and I'm posting this to see if it's an option that can help our community in what seems to be an approaching fuel tank crisis. I'm not volunteering to get something sorted, but If there is enough interest and somebody wants to take it up then it's on the table. I don't need a tank but If I did I'd probably go for one.

What do we reckon?

Phil

That's $1100 Canadian today. You can fix plenty of used tanks for $1100.

If this "tank crisis" gets to the point where you're prepared to pay $1100 plus the expensive shipping for an LC tank it's time to check your sanity because you're losing your mind. Just my 2 cents worth.

Dont forget to factor in the 'Aussie Factor' that money is ok for a tank that will work. Remember if I have a tank painted here and it gets ruined Ive lost 500+ in paint and decals, factor in a liner and other repairs and old tanks make less sense indeed... we have hardly any decent tanks in Aus and they would cost 500 if you found one, so 1000ish isnt a bad deal, even with paint on top.

I cant see Canadians buying any, but in Aus... well...

This tank issue will never go away. There has to be an easier solution. Surely someone on your continent has the metal working skills, or does the Aussie Factor come into play there as well?

Maybe a well lined fibreglass tank is the solution?

BTW...the alloy tank from India is also 520 Pounds. Hard to fathom how they can charge so much given the actual labour costs there. I just read that their steel tanks need a lot of bodywork due to grinder marks etc. It's probably safe to assume the alloy tanks would be the same.

It does John, I cant see any craftsman in sydney doing a tank in alloy for 1kish, more like 2 :(

Fibreglass may be ok, but some states outlaw those here for road use i think, and youd have to really trust your liner, or youd be back to having the same issue of ruining expensive paint again :(

The Indian tanks dont even bear thinking about, the shapes are sooo wrong.

They made tanks for the "Tuber" Buells which were very intricate and took much longer than first quoted

They were about £800

I was just throwing it up there to give the op a hand in spreading the word to help him get the numbers,it prolly never happen anyways.
The way I see it it is the weather systems,Canadians only get 3 mnths or so per year to ride, the rest of the time bikes are wrapped up for winter.Countries like UK,Australia,we can ride year round, blistering heat & freezing cold but not as bad as Canada gets it.So you guys will have heaps of really good condition bikes & we got flogged to death junk lol.
I should've posted the link on the Aust forum too.....
But Jon's right,it is so hard to find any tank over here in any sort of half decent condition,g/f tanks are illegal for road use here too.
Looked into the black plastic blow molded formed tanks to fit inside an LC tank couple years ago,cut the bottom off & use existing tank "shell" over the plastic formed tank.....
Endless emails all over the globe & ended up in China & still cost far too much. But I still believe this would be the way to go as there is heaps of tanks rusted out on the bottom.......supply & demand.
Fark i got writers cramps now... :smt005
