LC Motor Coming Together

#1 Post by Hooligan » Thu Jun 09, 2016 12:56 am

Its been quite a while (like 3 years) but the spare motor for my LC is finally beginning to come together. Still have a bunch of smaller details to work out but hoping to be able to swap engines later in the summer.

This is what the engine looked like when I bought it at a wrecker 3 some odd years ago. Pretty ratty and the pistons had suffered a 4-corner seizure.

After months of chipping away at it, I just had to see what it will look like so I threw everything together tonight.

It was this pic I was going for but quickly discovered that polishing an LC head is a huge PIA so glossy black paint was a much quicker and easier solution.

That is a first class job you have done. I've just finished the engine rebuild on my '82 LC and it certainly doesn't look this tidy, but the engine sure runs well with a new crank, pistons, trans bearings, etc.

A rd250/350lc left hand engine case bolts straight on and clears that issue up.

Love the Wrinkle paint HD like :-)
Be warned that the VHT stuff takes Months to fully cure.
Until then, it's quite fragile
Test it with yer fingernail .. gently.
LC cover is the way to go.. besides it's not that Crap shiny plastic of the RZ's.
You know about the Sprocket spacings and the 1/8" washer needed to fit the sprocket shaft nut on tightly?
Now you do

This motor won't go into a bike for a few months so the paint will have loads of time to cure.

Is the 1/8" spacer for when an RZ motor is installed into an LC frame?

Yes Valve Motor into an LC frame. Rear wheel sprocket offset is narrower.
One needs to use the LC engine's Output shaft spacer to line up the sprockets. Easy /peasy.
Problem surfaces when you go to tighten up the sprocket nut and one runs out of
Output shaft thread before the sprocket gets tightened, as it wasn't designed for the short spacer.
One needs an 1/8" spacer between Sprocket and Nut.
Hardware store Washers of a size appropriate to fit the shaft are typically 1/8" thick.

PS; Hopefully those Goofy Airfilters are for storage use only.
Those Suck Power (proven) and a rascal to set up for.
Stock airbox will work a Helluvalot 'better'.
Getting the OE airbox rubbers over the PWK bellmouths is Doable (just) after a bunch of boiling water baths and cursing
Better/easier would be to buy Urethane type boots for a Banshee.. still a bit of a struggle as the LC airbox inlets are Different'.

Just to be clear, the pic of the RZ motor with the polished head is not mine. It was just the pic I used for inspiration when I did mine.

I am using foam UNI filters on my bike. With the 6mm reed spacers, the carbs were a huge PIA to remove when the air of was in place. Hence the move to the UNI filters.

Ahhhh Wrinkle the Cyl head then.
Black is 'supposed' to be satin black. Not that originality means anything.
But Satin Does look better

My bike has Aprilia mirrors, R1 brakes, aftermarket levers and grips, a whole bunch of SS parts and powdered coated ancillaries. Not really interested in "originality".

Paint wont cure until it gets heated to activate the ceramic in it. I like the look.
