ktm thermostat installed to athena setup

#1 Post by two-stroke-brit » Sun Jun 26, 2016 5:41 pm

just thought i would post up some pics of the installed 55 DEG KTM thermostat plumbed in.
i got some "breeze" clamps through amazon. .
solid clamps (no slots) but the edges could be more rounded for my liking .

Looks like an easy answer to the thermostat problem as well as the water outlet issue.

Agreed Dave, I wish id done this with my outlet instead of having it welded, but with the rad solution i had back then it hit the rad hence i had it welded :/

thanks guys, a vertical outlet would be a better option, but this works without cutting/welding .
no room for a fan though.so i will see how it handles the Texas summer heat, and may have to revisit this.

If I'd live in Texas there would be no question at all whether a thermostat is needed - the answer is absolutely not.

I rode decades without and the bike has a mileage of 215.000 km.
On a twostroke there is no such thing as too cold. There is no f...ing oil in the pan that needs a min temperature to be pumped everywhere.

Only thing is that for emissions it's better to warm it up, that's why the stock thermostat has some 70 deg C.
In race applications they target 55 deg C plus/minus 5.

As I have a similar KTM part here, I rather worry about the massive flow restriction. My guess is that it'll reduce your system overall cooling performance by maybe 30%.
Bye
Martin

Thanks Martin i did look at it when i took it apart to test the thermostat.
but i figured the KTM manages ok.
but if it gets too hot its simple enough to remove

Often a restriction in a cooling flow is Useful. Be it from a designed orifice or a thermostat.
Fast flows can cause damaging hot spots and counterintuitively; overheats.
