Another LC finished... sort of...

#1 Post by Angus McL » Tue Jul 12, 2016 1:44 pm

So close to being on the road now. Have some issues to work out with the turn indicators, and the clutch, but just about done for this year. Over the winter I'll get a proper paint job on the tank and a decal kit installed. I'm thinking the white/silver/grey triple stripe on black for something a little different. It's not a full rebuild/restoration bike, but getting a neglected, non-numbers matching b*****d 4Y3 back on the road. Looking forward to putting some miles on it!

Lookin' good. I think the headlight needs to be tilted down a bit.

I had the headlight in upside down initially. I've since flipped it, but it is still a little high.

Congrats in getting that far along. Suspect you'll be ripping down the Bi-Hi soon enough. Just out of curiosity, what insurance like for an RD in NS?

Possibly a bad flasher relay? The oem Yamaha ones seem to be crap. You can use automotive ones, don't get the LED type, it wont work.
Looks like a pretty complete bike.
Just adjusting the clutch cable and adjusters?

So far I've only talked to my go-to insurance broker - his best was about $300 for the year. How's that compare to BC? Anyone else chime in on cost relative to ON or AB?

The fuse box is a mess - lots on tin foil! I only found that when I put the new battery in. I was hoping that was the blinker trouble, but doubting now after doing more reading.

A couple issues w/ the clutch. I got some TZ springs and put 3 of those in with the three old, tired ones that were in it. Clutch pull is REALLY stiff! Will be a bitch in traffic, but hoping I can live with it until the winter. Will open it up and go with 6 new LC springs then.

Haven't spent enough time to sort out the second issue yet. On initial setup I had to really crank in the push rod adjuster to get the clutch to release (not slip) when I let go of the lever. Worked fine for a few trips up and down the lane. A day or two later, the clutch wouldn't release enough (not slip) to pull the bike out of the driveway. I think I need to back the adjuster out to the book spec and try again. I put some Cdn Tire synthetic gear lube in the bottom end and wondering if it might be contributing to clutch slip.

Here's the gear lube I'm using. Anybody see any issues with the spec's?

I've been quoted $144 for three months on regular plates. $200 for collector ones for a full year with restrictions (not used for travel to work etc.)

The trans oil topic is a real can of worms here.
I use 10W40 oil like the Yamaha manual says to and it works for me. Put the bike in first gear.
Tighten the adjuster until you can squeeze lever and easily push the bike. That's it.
Did you have the adjuster at the engine apart?(the rz bikes don't have this, the older aircooled models did) It is easy to put it together incorrectly which changes the distance it "travels" and will not work correctly.

The adjuster must have been too far out initially and then I cranked it too far in. Adjusted it to the book spec last night, and 10min later it feels perfect. Oil doesn't seem to be an issue. No clutch slip last night.
