LC/rz/athena392 hybrid first PLUG READS

#1 Post by two-stroke-brit » Sun Aug 28, 2016 9:33 pm

well after melting my 82 RD350LC motor from a loose plug/massive air leak.
i decided to go the hybrid route.
it took 8 months but it runs .
thanks to all that helped .
seahorse your jetting start point was on point.
first start up was plagued by a coolant leak which ended up being the seal on the coolant pipe.
next stop dyno to tune.

cheers mark.

RZ/392 ATHENA hybrid stock 26mm LC carbs .
Sea level, 97 degrees temp
First plug read after 10 miles of up to 3/4 throttle with 350 mains and 25 pilots, needle mid clip.
Image
i think it could be a little lean (no detonation),so i decided to go to 360s and see what i get.
may raise the needle too.
trying to get it in the ball park and bed the rings in before heading to the Dyno.
what do you guys think.

Looks good to me and pleased to hear you could fast track jetting to get her up and running.
If I can add some caution make sure you take the time to let her warm up for 5 minutes before riding each time.
Plugs look OK to me but that's just internet analysis, pay attention to your temperature, running a bit of extra fuel helps err on the side of caution.
Remembering we are all rarely on main jet alone, the combination of needle position and main jet is key.
As you mentioned if you suspect your slightly lean drop a clip ( raise the needle) one position, you may even notice a slight improvement in bottom end drive in lower revs. If it won't get on the pipe after the change then your to rich, but I think you already know your jetting is good.
Air filter length has an effect on things as well I have found from trial and error.
The longer and more still air you can trap the better.
Hence I'm a fan of the airbox and if running pods get the longest biggest ones that will fit.
The short stubby hard backed crome filters restrict flow significantly and it is noticeable when riding back to back trials of long and short filters.

Thanks seahorse, i have gone up one size on the main to 360 and raised the needle one clip and it still runs good and seems to pull a little better from the bottom.
I will do another chop for a comparison .
