Elsie mirrors

#1 Post by LC Cnd » Thu Nov 17, 2016 2:23 pm

Think I found a set decent of black non-knuckled stock mirrors (both #'d 3103 405) and noted they are different lengths -the left is longer fm the mirror to the bend towards clutch handle. Ck'd the mirror #'s & they aren't in the parts catalogue. Suspect it has to do with the clutch handle being longer than the brake. Attempted to see the dif on web photos and the manual - couldn't tell. Perhaps I found the wrong ones.

I bought these they are NOS Yamaha not sure of the part number but since they are chrome (for now) they are not going to be the OEM for my 82 but some black paint and I think they will be close enough

Its strange the LC mirrors seem to come in a few flavours (knuckles or not and some say that some were chrome not black, tho i debate that) and I dont really understand why any market would mandate something different, so its a mystery...

My uk one in 82 had black stems with crappy knuckles that would slowly rotate backwards if teraveling faster than about 50mph.
and i seem to have got the exact same ones on my current Canadian bike.
also the backs were/are cone shaped not flat.

I'v got 4 different sets - including the knuckled European ones, although the French and German bikes appear non-knuckled on Xavier's form. Suspect my silver set is fm an RD400; two are after market (Yambits/RDLC Crazy). Hoping the 4th is real. Learnt that the non-knuckled are reversed thread to prevent fast speeds from spinning the mirrors like weather vanes. You'd think the lock nut(s) would prevent such action. Jon your probably right about mirror parts being geographically different. The Japanese model has square ones - located a set (in Nippon) but not for $400 in knackered shape. I only asked this question to try n' get as close to stock as possible (locally).

Typically one mirror is reverse and one is standard thread so they both turn the same direction based on where they sit on the handlebars...This was what I was told by the local dealer (Steve)..The chrome stalk with black plastic round mirrors I had very much appeared to be stock.

UK mirrors fitted with the knuckle are both the same dimension from said knuckle to the elbow behind the mirror bowl.

Also the left mirror, clutch lever side has a standard right hand thread whilst the brake lever side is machined with a left hand thread which of course should match the thread taped into the master cylinder housing.

Its the non knuckled pair I was thinking of Nigel - any chance you could compare the measurements? The left mirror is longer than the right? Wondering if your pair is the same as the one pictured. My left is 8"; the right 7".

I don't have a pair of original Euro spec mirrors to measure.

MY understanding that the Knuckled stems were some sort of UK Only safety affectation.
Mike's SX sells surprisingly good quality Repros for ~20$ /pair !
Both stems of equal length... as Yama San intended.
Buy and use

I know about the after market bits; curious about the originals. Going to contact my bud at Yamaha Canada, who got me the stats about how many LC were sold in CND, for a possible answer. Did not think this would be a stumper.

I bought a pair of the pattern knuckle black stem mirrors a couple of years ago but they never stay in the correct place, and you can't tighten the knuckles up in them either, I set them how I wanted them and put a couple of drops of Loctite instant adhesive on them, this did help, I did buy a set of RD125LC MK2 black stem mirrors from Yambits which don't have the knuckles and look pretty good, haven't used them yet though

Cheers
Steve

I've got a set of NOS 4L0 UK spec mirrors if you want measurements?
