RD350LC 4LO Build

#1 Post by tacky1 » Sun Aug 19, 2018 3:06 pm

Picked up a running 4LO CA plated bike, Really rough, But runs absolutely great, Full Nut Bolt restore in progress. Stripped the motor, Crank and pistons look like new, zero damage, Crank has a little spread on the right side, Sent out the cylinders and crank to be stripped and inspected and replace anything that needs doing.
The cylinders are to be honed or bored, Exhaust stud must have sheared and the previous owner absolutely fucked it up, What a butcher!!!!!
Subframe was a little tweaked, so we straightened that out, Lock stop is snapped off, so Ill weld a new one on,
Picked up a complete bodywork set (thanks Mark :) ) Ill send that out to the painter when it gets here.
All metal to be powder coated etc, Wheels Ill do myself..

Tyga pipes are ordered, All new nuts/bolts ordered, Rad cover, clock covers etc etc etc.... Norbo will retire after this order.. :)

A few pics of the beast.....

Yep, for sure that is a bit rough. That fuel tank looks ugly!

Congrats on the big though. They aren't making any more of them so its nice to see one come back from the grave.

The tank is totally shot. It's actually hollow!! He removed the whole bottom and used it to cover another tank he ran. :)

Whats with the headlight? Did someone just paint the chrome ring around the light or is it some kind of aftermarket unit? The glass looks flatter than the OEM part?

Its a Chinese 9 LED light he butchered into it!!! Everything on this bike has been butchered, He used this bike for wheelies, That was it, He rode it to and from work on its back wheel!!!
Man he was smooooth, He fired it up the day I picked it up, Took off in first, snicked into second, popped it up on the back wheel and quick shifted into 6th and just rode along :)

1 careful owner. :smt044

I kinda like the idea of a blacked out LED headlight. Is it really a hatchet job? I'm not gonna damage my headlight bucket or do anything permanent to mine for sure.

I was gonna install a high intensity LED bulb into the OEM bucket but the heat sinks jammed inside the plastic bucket with all the wiring concerned me so I didn't end up doing it.

The LED bulbs worked well on my RZ and FZ where the heat sinks can sit exposed to fresh air circulation.

Bryan and I went to the wreckers today, and they were closed, so no tach. I'll have to go again next Tuesday.
We hit another wrecker, no luck. They were open though.

Crank cases and carbs and other parts out for vapor blasting,
Crank, bores out for rebuilding etc.
Frame, swing arm etc etc is ready to be dropped off at the powder coaters,
Wheels are being prepped by me for paint and cleaning, Polish the lips and edges.
Everything has been washed, cleaned and brass brushed.

And the first thing you will discover is that the OEM brakes are CRAP!. :smt012

No amount of rose coloured glasses can fix the original brakes. Hence first thing I upgraded on my LC was swapping out the callipers for a set of Blue Spots and a more modern master. Good brakes, more than just about anything, make the bike so much nicer to ride. Good tires is prob second on that list. :smt003
