Radiator Fall adjustor
Radiator Fall adjustor
Running the 4L0 for evening rides (10-14 C) and noted I could not get to operational temp. Recalled seeing a diagram for blocking the rad to elevate the heat. Cost me $1.79 using black foam fm the dollar store - in case your looking for a similar solution. Ended up using an eco-knife instead of scissors. Pressed the shape of the rad cover (v shaped) in to the board for a proper cut. Bonus was colour match electrical tape did the rest. Not sure if I over did it but there is plenty of left over material to make adjustments.

Re: Radiator Fall adjustor
Temp was approximately 16-17 C (64F) yesterday afternoon for a 2hr ride. Noted that the bike was running a hair below the first optimal heat range mark. However in prolonged sun shine the needle would go between the marks as long as I rode between 6000-7000 rpm. Most of the ride was in the shade. Will probably bump up the rad block 2 more slots as long as the temp stays stable.

Re: Radiator Fall adjustor
What a difference 4 degrees higher in temp makes - had to take off the latest block off as the temp needle was dipping into the red. On the way home today could't keep the engine warm enough. Live n learn.

Consider 'fiddling' with the Cyl head water outlet to accomodate a thermostat.

Are you referring to part #29 in the Japanese 4U version of the exploded parts diagram attached?

Re: Radiator Fall adjustor
The stock temp gage is completely off, if it comes to showing the engine temp.
Also the term "not getting to temp" indicates that you need a certain temp as high as a 4 stroke engine.
A twostroke likes it much much cooler if it comes to performance.
Fit a digital one and aim for 55 deg C +/- 5 deg.
You may note that you get that without clogging your rad with that crap.
I even run with low 40's in winter as I use a much bigger radiator.

For the cost of the foam board its cost effective - just the trial/error part has to be worked out. As far as digital temp gauge is concern (perhaps a winter project install) - any recommendations about brand?
Re: Radiator Fall adjustor
Operative Word was : temp stability!
Run 55c or 80c if you wish, it's your preference /choice.
No arguement that cooler is 'gooder' tho.
But 40c one moment and 80 c 5 mins later, then back again and again.. is simply poor.
It's important that the temps remain stable at the chosen temp.
Ergo the Stat's purpose... even in Race machines
Yes piece #29 looks like a stat (One from a Saab physically fits) But #1 will need a bit of (fly cut) recess to fit the flat rubber stat seal.
Bypass hole is already there, remember the Japanese origins.
There is also a hose inline 50c Thermostat from a Snow machine? that some retrofit.

On a Tourist tour of the Tower of London..
the Guide was on about the Original Axe that chopped off Anne Boleyns' head.
Said it was original and that the handle had been replaced twice and the head once..
But he was adamant that it was THE original axe
