Obtuse??.. I told you: a Saab 900 or 9000 thermostat is the exact Yama thermostat.... right down to the correct rubber seal.
Typically 15$ at Napa or Lordco.

Yep. I can vouch for Bare on this. I run the Saab in my 350.

Erm.. OK.
On a Tourist tour of the Tower of London..
the Guide was on about the Original Axe that chopped off Anne Boleyns' head.
Said it was original and that the handle had been replaced twice and the head once..
But he was adamant that it was THE original axe :smt017

Reminds me of Trigger in “Only fools and horses” :smt048

Circumspect. Thank-you Bare for the info. Went to my local Napa dealer and they had the Saab 900 thermostat (also good in Fords/VW's apparently) however the outside diameter of the thermostat went to the out side edge of the bike's housing. What year of Saab part are you referencing?

This one fits with the suggested cuts. Not sure if it fm a Saab - fm the text its probably YPVS. Interesting comment on the RCLC Crazy form:
"It's just a very basic system that works but could be better . When people start modifying things it will get out of balance, for example standard engine large radiator it will over cool warm up over cool. If you watch your temperature gauge it will be moving back and forth. The bypass needs to bypass the cooling effect of the radiator not go into the top of the radiator if it's standard. I like the little bronze pipe on the YPVS head but I consider this to be more valuable as a de-airation line for any trapped air in the engine after all it does go to the top of the system."

I know we all search for perfection but sometimes I wonder how critical of an issue this is. I used to run my old liquid cooled YZ125 and my KX500 2-stroke MXers all winter long up here in the North East. Stud the tires and rip up the frozen river or lakes with ambient air temps probably much colder than what any sane person would endure on a street bike. Neither bike had a thermostat and neither bike ever seized on me during winter use.

I would think one should be more concerned with overheat than with overcool?

It an issue of either under cooling or over heating that can wear an engine quickly - something I want to avoid having just got through break in. Operating temp is the sweet spot and I have issues while driving from late afternoon to evening with temp fluctuation too cool for the LC. When it becomes single digit local temps the bike will be winterized. Today high was 12 C and sunny and I was riding. I'm hoping the thermostat will bring stability operating for the street. The YZ125/KX500 are both race bikes hence the are probably pinned to win and remain at hot level temperature while ice racing. Still interested to find out which Saab 900 stat fits.
