Wheels are painted with Rattle can PJ1 or VHT
I noticed the color is extreemly close to the gold on my RZ500 stock wheels.
I guess i am going to use this as my build thread for this bike.
So i will give some background info and my plans for it.
Which can and will change at any time :smt001
Ok so first of all, a big thanks to Nocturnal and his dad, who sold me this bike for a great price. His dad has 2 more LC`s still so he wont miss this one. The guy they got it from owns a media blasting company and he stripped and powdercoated the frame and swingarm black, stripped and painted the gas tank and bodywork.
The engine looks stock and fairly fresh. I peeked into the cylinders and everything looks good. I will be taking off the clutch cover so i can look in there too, but i am going to run it this summer without splitting the cases.
The bike is currently setup for premix, with an oil pump blockoff plate.
I already sourced a complete oil pump and will be using that and rejetting and all that fun stuff.
The bike came with a set of stock exhaust in good shape, and a set of RZ350 spec2 chambers with brackets to make them fit the LC.
Bike came with 1979 RD400 upper and lower triples(35mm dia.) and 1986-newer cdn RZ350 forks + calipers, and generic clipons.
I want this bike to look pretty stock but with some improvements. :smt001
Heres my plans for the bike this summer:

I have sourced a set of early RZ350 forks and triples(35mm vs 32mm orig on the LC) to use with LC or early RZ fender
I have brand new Yamaha 4LO handlebars
Front brake calipers and master will be something better, i have`nt decided what yet.
Oil pump installed
Black mars bar paintjob with the gold wheels.
Leaning towards using the spec2 chambers for now, i like the stock pipes but i gotta hear this thing!
And all the usual stuff, fix the harness, change the head bearings...etc.

By the way, I found out that the LC oil pump and gears etc. are the same as the RZ350. :smt001

Colin, from what you know of the oil pump, can I fit a LC oil pump and gear to a '86 RZ350 motor without any changes? The pulley is stamped 4L1.

They are identical. RZ ones say 4L1. Yamaha has superseeded the 4L0 part number to the RZ 1UA number. And the gears etc are the same too.

There may be a difference for the index marks. The 1UA pulleys have an index mark for rigging that the 83-85 pumps don't have, so naturally the RD pump will also be missing this index mark.

What do you mean John, the marks @ 2 o'clock?

That's right Sean, the marks at 2 o'clock.

This is a 1UA pump. Same 4L1 on the pulley, but another index mark on the pulley. Remember that the rigging procedure for 1UA pumps is different than the earlier bikes.

I had some progress today so i thought i would post an update.

The bike came with these 86 RZ forks (which use the topmount fender) and clipons.

Image

Unfortunately i want to use handlebars and the original sidemount fender. So i pulled that stuff off.

And after changing the bearings for some new allballs tapered rollers, i put on some 84-85 RZ350 USA forks, with fresh powdercoated upper triple and new handlebars. :smt003

Image

It worked out well because these forks use the same axle, and they have 4 bolts in the lower triple so they can mount the horn bracket.
I can use the original fender if i make some spacers. It is more narrow than the RZ fender because the wheel is narrower.

My horn bracket is a little bent so i have to straighten it out. I Still have to decide what brake calipers to use.
And i need some headlight mounting brackets for 35MM forks. I might be able to modify the original ones for 32MM forks to fit, we`ll see.

These Harrison 4 pots bolt straight on 4l0/31K forks without the need for adapter brackets......

Pretty hefty price to buy from the retailer but I bagged a pair of these new ones for a lot less than half the retail price. Going to anodise them black before I fit them to my white bike.

Another nice option for an LC is the classic AP Racing/Lockheed CP2696 twin piston caliper and NK Racing already make brackets for them.

Oooooooh. nice wheels.
Maybe some new tires though. Lol!

Not much new to report on this project i am afraid.
I bought a new decal set from reproductiondecals.com and i am having a guy i trust spray the bodywork gloss black. Dropping it off Monday. I have realized that if i want to ride this bike this summer, i cant do it all myself.
I might have found an option for the brake calipers.
I dont want to say what they are until i know for sure.
