Is there an issue with going over 66 mm with the 4L0 cylinders? Need to rework the head?

I guess it all depends on what you need out of the bike. If it's all stock maybe stick with the stock engine. Resale on the RDLC is climbing fast and original parts will make you more money. If its going to be modified you might as well modify it a lot. You already have the sexy 87RZ and the RZV, so sticking with the 4L0 motor would be my suggestion. Nice to have one of each.
I would have to get another harness and i would go the zeel route if i use the powervalve motor. As far as resale goes, pure stock perfect condition bikes seem to go for the best money.
I think i am leaning towards building a 4LO engine with improvements.

The top end is at 66MM(2mm oversize)and the wiseco pistons/bores are damaged. I havent removed the crank but it doesnt look fresh, the rods are pitted where the small end bearings go etc. So it really needs a full rebuild to know where i stand when i ride it next summer.
I have a complete 1UA rz350 motor here that also needs a full rebuild.
So i am trying to decide if i should keep this bike original or go to the more powerful rz motor. I realize the swap is an easy one, just not sure which engine to go with. What do you guys think?
Any input is appreciated.

Gah! That sucks Colin. Scouts honor, I did not know that was inside. Pistons did not look bad from the outside... I guess looks can be deceiving. Sorry the engine is ass. I feel like I was screwed now too actually as the guy said he took it apart, inspected everything, stamp of approval, and put it back together. :smt013 He is pretty well known in the VRRA circle, so this is surprising. If you have pics, I would be interested in having them so I can send them to the guy with a WTF note.

My dad may have other cylinders, but nothing on low bore. He does have some that were on my old bike. PDQ ported, supposedly not ideal as the transfers were not worked much (if at all), but the bike was bloody fast. Think they MAY have a couple bores left.

You have powervalves... stick with the LC engine. Easy to mod for an RZ crank.

No worries Dana. The price was right. I had to really look in the ports to see any marks and i had a feeling that i should pull the top end. The seizeco pistons look fairly new but they both have several seizure marks. The rings are not pinched. The cylinders are not scored too bad. My guess is too much heat/lack of oil. The bike was on premix, maybe the ratio was nt enough or the cooling system is buggered.
Who is PDQ? Anyway, now i will know the true state of the engine components when my speedo needle passes 200kph this summer

to the best of my knowledge, he did not actually run it. literally bought it, took it apart, fixed some cosmetics, and bolted it together since it was "ok". :smt011 truth be told he races 4t kawis...

PDQ was an old speed shop. think they are gone now. Joken is on the money.

Update! Its finished and on the road!
So many twists and turns in this project.
I ended up keeping it as original as possible.
The only changes I made were a 520 chain+ sprocket upgrade and I used 1983 RZ350 35mm forks and triples.
They worked out great, the steering stops are in the right spot and they use the same bearings as the RD.
The engine is completely rebuilt with a new crank from Yambits, which has worked out great. Its smooth and quiet.

Thanks to everyone who helped with new and used parts!
Yam4l0 for the new horn harness and olive plated screw set, redline junkie, nokturnal, joken, everyone!
My thoughts about the bike so far:
Its a plush soft, street suspension.
Very comfortable seating position, however no wind protection so you really notice the wind.
Powerband is nuts between 7000-9000 but the power goes flat at an indicated 10000rpm
Feels and sounds much different than the RZ350.
I have some aftermarket pipes I will be installing and jetting for later in the summer.

Lol. I have already started collecting parts to build a 4L0 special. Color will either be white or "limited version" red.
Wider wheels/modern tires, ported cylinders and other engine mods.
The black bike here is staying the way it is.
Learned a lot from this rebuild. Things to watch out for during the engine rebuild.
This bike was being used as a race bike, and quite a few things needed replacing.
For example the splines on the kicker shaft and shift shaft were toast. The cases needed replacing as the top case was damaged from a chain breaking and the lower had a broken "tab" that the kicker locks into.
