It had been years since I rode an LC. I bought a really nice restored '81 LC a week ago and have been enjoying the heck out of it. This bike had OEM pipes, filter and airbox and was running 230 main jets.
It seemed to run pretty well except for a nasty flat spot and stumble from 5000 - 6000 rpm as it was coming onto the pipe. After that it would pull cleanly to redline. The guy who built the bike told me it might be running a bit rich.
While the bike ran well it didn't seem as mental as I remembered these bikes being but I kinda put that down to age. Anyway, I had a set of expansion chambers awaiting a bike and decided to try them today.
All I can say is OMFG! What a difference. Running the 230 main jets the motor rev'd cleanly all the way from bottom end to redline with no midrange stumble. The power difference is astounding. I tried a wheelie and almost went over backwards.
These pipes have changed my friendly, nice LC into a totally wicked sounding rev monster.
As I have only had this bike a week and the motor only has a few hundred kms on it I am scared silly of seizing it. I had a set of 240 main jets so I installed those just to be sure. This caused the midrange stumble to reappear although not quite as bad as it had been with the OEM pipes. This suggests to me that the 240 mains are too rich and it should be OK on the 230's?
I tried a plug chop but it was dark and the LED flashlight I was using made the plug look very white. I am going to try it again in daylight and see how the spark plug looks. I will happily live with a midrange stumble vs a seized motor but the clean rev through the entire powerband is intoxicating.
Can one jet size too small create a dangerously lean condition? I really need to learn more about reading spark plugs. I live at nearly 4000 ft altitude and fuel injected four strokes have ruined me. :(

With the chambers and the 230 mains, it seemed to run absoltely perfect. I went to 240 mains because I had them and because I am scared of going to lean and seizing the thing. A bit rich is just fine for the moment till I get a handle on the jetting.
Gotta get my Husky Supermoto bike sorted out tonight so I can make some room in the garage. Too many bikes at the moment. :)
Then tomorrow try and work through the jetting on the LC. I am going to go through the whole process so I can better understand how everything works and how it affects the motor. Guess I will be buying a bunch of fresh plugs. :(

i had 240 mains in my bike when i got it, after a full resto i had the same problem as you.
stock is 220 but i ran the 240's as thats what i had, and being richer wasn't to concerned (just wanted to fire it up and go around block.)
so you basically leaned it out by putting the chambers on,i think if you had went to stock jets (220) and stock pipes your stuble would have been gone.

Yea, we have a serious bunch of biking lunatics to ride with. The stuff that happens on rides kills me sometimes. It is hard not to laugh. However some of those boys are seriously skilled maniacs.lovin the motard vids Hooligan, nice work!
I come from decades of street riding and roadracing. I'd never jumped a bike before I got a motard. Now I am amazed at some of the stuff I clear on a regular basis. It is loads of fun. Everyone should have a Tard.

Oh I have considerably more than one pic with the police. I have prob a half dozen. However most of the time we get away ticket free. In three years of hooliganing, the ten of us have only gotten a total of 4 tickets and they have all been minor. It has been worth the price of admission a hundred times.

Well I am happy I found it when I did.
Its gorgeous and I love it. The pipes sound outrageously good and it is a ton of fun to ride. Just gotta sort out the jetting and then everything will be perfect.
A motard wouldn't be much fun where you live. They are really an urban motorcycle. I hate riding mine on the highway.

I agree with hooligan, motards are for the city really, most of them, especially the European ones, are hard work on long straights. Ive only ever had KTM SMs and 30mins terrorising the city streets is about all you need before your bum is numb and your hands are shaking, perfect time for a coffee and then do it all again!

We ride for 5-6 hours at a time. Lots of breaks and stops in the middle but there is just so much fun to be had. We have dozens of jumps and other obstacles around the city. We couldn't hit them all in a day or even two days.I agree with hooligan, motards are for the city really, most of them, especially the European ones, are hard work on long straights.
