2nd time I've broken the license plate / rear signal holder

#1 Post by pushstartrearset » Thu Nov 07, 2013 9:35 pm

The dam thing keeps breaking. Anyone else have this problem. Gone through (2) of these so far.

Wonder if Roger has a solution?

Anyone got any ideas on how to keep (mainly the signal stalks are fracturing this thing) this together?

I've currently got the left rear turn signal and license plate zip-tied to the stock grab rail.

Not clear what is breaking, is it the steel tail light bracket? If so where is it breaking?

I don't ride many goaty trails. There is one road w/ 15 mph turns and ripples in the road...that can be fun for having the rear skip around at slow speeds!!! <--could have done it. Roads around Vancouver, WA are pretty good. Seems the signal stalks are too dam heavy or maybe I'm too dam heavy? I haven't taken it apart as i currently ride it like this w/ the tie wraps (only bike w/ new tires front/rear and it's the wet season, so...). the left turn signal is all wiggle and the license plate drops w/o the tie wraps.

would love to see another solution for the tail section. Maybe buy another and have a welder gusset the dam thing?

Is your brake light secure? The rubber dampeners look past their prime. There is a steel spacer in the dampeners that keeps the nut/washer from over compressing the rubbers. But when the rubber gets old and cracked, it's really not pushing against the washer, and you end up bottoming out on the spacer. On my bikes both were like that, and at certain RPMs my brake light would bounce around, cracking one of the bracket. After welding, I solved the problem by adding soft rubber washers.

Oh and the rubbers are NLA. :(

Thanks Xkaboomx. Looks like my only options (weld/add fresh rubber) since you can't buy OEM and I don't currently see any on Ebay either. The rubbers are cracked and dried out.

Yep, that's it. The sleeve is missing and the damper is so compressed and shagged out as a result that it isn't doing anything.
These still show up on Yamaha USA's website so maybe they are superceded to a newer number. Yamaha still uses this setup on loads of bikes.

Ron Ayers and CMS both show parts available. That usually means Yamaha still has them.

That's good to know. When I checked with my yamaha dealer about two years ago they were not available. Maybe they were just on back order.

Pretty sure I saw them on ebay this a.m. from a seller from Singapore. Old Parts or something like that? I've ordered from them before and would recommend buying from them.

Thanks Ruzty, Silver for the explanation/links. I know a good local welder (fixed a cracked chain guard for the 400F & expansion chamber mount repairs) that can fix this and I'll get new "rubbers" and sleeves to prevent unwanted accidents like this :). EW, I've seen that guy on ebay selling NOS stuff, so know what you are talking about. Coming out of Singapore, i bet he bought a cargo box cheap and is making a fortune online at US prices or higher.

You guys were right!! All 3 sleeves were missing on the rubbers. The good news is i have spare sleeves :). Weld is done. I sanded the raised beads flat w/ a dremel sand drum. Will order new rubber grommets and I am thinking some very LIGHT LEDs w/ a resistor in series for each side. Not sure of the ohm rating, but thinking a 25 watt / 6 ohm resistor. Sound about right? I want very little stress on the mount ends and very small signals that don't weigh much. Should be a fun little project as i have some radio shack soldering stuff to play around w/.

will put a couple coats of paint on and bake it in the oven.

Let me know what ohm resistor i'll need for LEDs if the 6 ohm isn't the right one. I'm just guessing on the resistor size and i believe you put it on the pos + side. Correct me if I am wrong.

GF bought some short micro arrowhead indicators (cycle gear). Looks to use a very small bulb. Looks sorta like a flashcube style bulb (remember the old Kodak square cameras w/ the disposable rotating flash? Anyway it draws only 21W. I know i need 27w for a flash if i remember correctly. Want to stay away from resistors and I've read up they get hot and this looks like an easier fix w/o cutting into the wires, so I am thinking of replacing the flasher relay on the RZ. I'm only putting these on the rear, so stock signals on the forks.

Parts: 2 well nuts looks like a good solution and use those on the front windscreen w/ success..ugly but works, 2 toilet seat washers (see the white washers!). Looks like I'll have to cut the connectors as they look Euro style or undersized.

anyone have any suggestions for a flasher relay from Autozone or O'Reillys? 2 pole? 3 pole? And how to wire in /swap leads if necessary? I looked around and think something like a 12V - .02~20A signal relay should cover all the bases.
