Which pipes necessitate center stand removal? I've run Kennys, Gibsons and Wicked and all have fitted with the center stand.

Can't use it with my JL or JM.

My wicked 'big bore' pipes are huge but the c/stand still fits... Arron has a JLs on his bike and im sure it has the c/stand? Is that right Aaron?

Depends on which JL you have I suppose. My stand doesn't even come close to fitting.

From what I've seen it seems that in most cases where the pipes will allow a stand to be used the pipes will have the stop welded on.

Back in the day I remember removing the centre stand but these days the LC is just a play bike so a bit of extra weight is a non issue. The side stand on the LC was always a wee bit wobbly so the centre stand offers a more secure option.

June 1977. My brand new, chappy red, RD400, was less than a week old.
I came home and pulled into the driveway on a hot day, flipped down the sidestand, and went inside.
When I came out several hours later, the sidestand had sunk into the hot pavememt, and my bike was on its side leaking fluids.
That was the last time I willingly used a sidestand.
Don't even have them on my bikes anymore.

To make sure that I didn't have a brain fart with my track bike,
I removed the sidestand mounting tab, before powder coating the frame.

Also got rid of the mounting tab on my project bike.
It was ugly, and partially hid the nice chrome pipes.

And that sidestand stuff is really freaking Heavy. Its got weigh at least, 0.844 kg (1.86 lbs)

But, that's just my opinion.

FWIW, when I put the Centerstand on the scales, they maxed out. So, the centerstand weighs more than 1.11 kg (2.45 lbs).
If I had to guess, I'd say it weighs about 3.5 lbs.

Yup. I cut all that stuff off my LC. I had it down in weight. No subframe either. No signals. Removed all the then useless wiring and associated accessories, battery, kickstart, speedo. I never weighed the stuff I took off, but I bet the thing was well under 250lbs.

You know what is surprisingly very heavy on these bikes ? The front fenders. I had mine off for the first time today, damn that's some heavy plastic. Not sure exactly what it weighs, but I have metal front fenders on bikes that don't weigh that much. The little side stand, is pretty heavy for its size. I just removed it, several days ago and would have guess it weighs a few pds more.

The center stand is my preference, for ease of maintenance. Also the side stand did not clear my wicked pipes, so I took it off.

The weight of a center stand is not as issue, or I'd loose 20 pounds of fat from me if weight was a priority.

The weight of us riders is a good point. Shedding pounds off the bike helps lighten it up but what about us? I have not ridden the RZ yet but I'm 70lbs heavier than my racing days. That's a ton of weight, well actually it's 70lbs. :smt001

Evans Ward wrote:Love my center stand for all the reasons mentioned already. I have old school Spec II pipes that allow CS retention. Bike is so much more stable when parked on the CS. Ask jeevans1 about when I caught his restored RZ when it fell off the side stand when we were assisting a down cruiser rider on the Dragon one year! IMHO, the side stand placement by the factory is not ideal and I don't feel confident when using the side stand at any time. YMMV.
Yep that was a close call, there was three of us trying to catch it. [smilie=ops.gif] I only use the side stand now if the bike is pointed up hill, the bike will roll off the side stand if it is pointed down hill and it don't take much down hill grade for the bike to roll off.

The side stand is fine, it's the stop that needs work. If you grind a little off of the stop it allows the stand to over-centre more and you get a more positive lock in the down position. It is good practice to leave the bike in gear when using the side stand. it won't roll far.
