Rear shock

#1 Post by ron » Sun Mar 30, 2014 4:39 pm

Hi
I'm looking for a new rear shock, and it must be better than the standard rear shock. It may well be used.
Do you have any suggestions?

Ron

99-01 Yamaha R6 rear shock. There's approximately 30 of them currently on Ebay. Extremely easy to adjust, tune, etc. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1999-2002-R6-R- ... a2&vxp=mtr" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Why not ? Are you short ? If so, that shouldn't dictate how high or low your bike sits. It will handle two worlds apart in reference to cornering. If you want a better shock as you stated. You can buy the most expensive shock in the world and install it. It won't mean a thing if your bike doesn't have the proper sag, rebound and compression according to your specific weight, riding habits, where you ride, terrain, etc. You can't accomplish that with the oem shock as there is no adjustability for those conditions. I'd suggest learning how to properly set sag on both ends of the bike before anyone thinks about spending money on suspension parts. Otherwise, it's a total waste.

Just buy a proper aftermarket like a nitron if you want same length/height shock and are willing to pay for it, then fix the front end and have it properly set up by a pro, the bike will then be 'all you' and handle like a dream for your weight/style of riding.

If you want to do it cheap... R6 is the best of the bunch... a bit higher but easily usable.

If you want to do it medium priced... place a WTB for a used Fox twin clicker / ohlins / nitron etc etc

You will still need to do something to the front to enjoy the new rear end I fear...

the bike is a 3hm 250 . its just a bit to soft

all setup has to be done by me . you may know out in this part of the wold you are out in the bush by yourself when it comes to these bikes

i like how it sits now . i dont want to jack it up to high or it will look silly . with the clip ons you allready ride it balls squashed to the tank any higher wont be good . it handles really well just bit to soft at rear when riding it hard

higher will be good because then the pipes wont scrape .. but still

im 6'1 and about 75-80kg

i dont ride it all that often , too many bikes only one ass . i do want to ride it more often its a fun little bike

i dont want to spend heaps of $$ a r6 shock and bushes thats my price range

the front has thicker oil and thats it . but the forks are a bit of a mash up of parts . 1xg stanchions same as 350 f2 non screw in tops . but 3hm lowers

can the bottom of the r6 shock be cut and shortend .

It's not as high as you might think it is. This has an R6 shock (1999-2002). It sits just fine and works well. The increased rear height goes a long way towards improving the bike's handling.

This is the cheapest way to get a better shock on an RZ350. John at Economy Cycle will sell you the shock and bushings for $89.99.

it looks good on your bike

yes that was the plan if i wanted the shock . john is a good man !

just worried spend this money and get something that i dont like

here is how my bike sits . im thinking anymore in the back and it will upset things

my swingarm is 10mm longer than the 350 ones aswell

Like John, mentioned. The visual height is not that much of a difference. Here's a pic with it installed on my bike also. With this pic you have to consider that it's also on the center stand. Making it appear to sit a lot higher than it actually does. Plus, I have a higher profile rear tire than stock. You can also drop your forks through the triple trees anywhere from a 1/4 to 1/2 of an inch. That will counter the rear end raise and that too will improve the handling. The link for the part I posted for you was only $30 bucks for example. Several on Ebay listed around that price. That's as cheap as it gets, with improvements made. It's a good modification. If it's set up correctly, you won't be disappointed. That's a very nice bike you have. :smt023

Yes ... it's a lot of money to pay for a good rear shock.
What do you think of the shock from a Honda cbr 600? can see that it is also being used

Have a search / google Ron, the F4i fits, but consensus is that the R6 is better.

I really like the idea of the R6 shock, but I keep looking at the swingarm too. I am so easily swayed.

If you have questions about suspension setup, grab a copy of Andrew Trevitt's suspension book. Money well spent...
