Help! need a seal for sliding part of front brake caliper?

#1 Post by expat » Tue May 06, 2014 6:10 pm

I need a seal for the pin that the caliper body slides on. It is hard to describe but my calipers are in 2 parts, the body that houses the piston etc and the carrier part that bolts to the fork leg. On the carrier, there are 2 plated pins, one is tightened using an allen wrench and the other which has the seal is tightened using a regular 14mm hex wrench. I need the seal for this pin. it is looks a bit like a square section O ring with a small groove on the outside.
I wrecked mine trying to re-assemble the calipers using new boot seals from RDLC crazy which were a really tight fit over this o ring type seal.
Looking on the Ron Ayers Fiche, I cannot see the carrier or the pins and seals..
Anyone know how to find it or does anyone have an old caliper that I can buy the carrier part with the pins and seal?

I am away on business but found this on ebay to show the part. The seal I need is on the pin inside the caliper and cannot be seen in the photo!

As usual, hope the forum folks can help!

I checked his site and couldn't see them. Its not the seal you can see in the picture, I bought a set of them from him and they are thicker than the OEM ones which is what caused the other seal to tear when I re-assembled the calipers. it's the seal on the metal pin that slides inside the caliper body. I will check again..

Those are the outer seals that you can see in the photo I posted. The Yamaha parts diagram is not accurate compared to the caliper on the bike. The caliper is 2 parts, the carrier that bolts to the fork leg and the caliper body. The body is shown in the diagram but the carrier is not. The carrier is a cast piece with 2 pins that bolt onto it, one pin has a seal on it. The pins slide into the caliper body and allow it to slide back and forth as the brakes are applied.

The more I look at the pic you posted and the parts book, the more I think those seals they show are what you need... I agree they dont show the carrier, but the carrier pin slides into the caliper body, and those type of sliders are protected by the dust seals, one is part 10 and one is 18 (or 11 and 19 for the other side i think). I agree its not simple or shown well but i do think those are what you need...

The reason I disagree is because the larger pin on the carrier (the one tightened using an Allen key) does not have a seal at all. I think the 2 numbers (10 & 18 or 11 & 19) are for the left and right calipers.... The mystery continues!!

Ok, so youre saying that there is really only one dust seal on these and yet the parts fiche lists 2?

Help! need a seal for sliding part of front brake caliper?

#12 Post by expat » Wed May 14, 2014 11:16 pm

That's the one! Only one seal on the pin, the other has no seal for some reason. I also posted on the RDLC crazy forum and someone there responded.
Anyone know why Yamaha don't even list the part?
Thanks for checking!

Thanks John but these are the bellows or boot type seals shown in my picture. The photo posted by Arronmvrider is what I need. Hopefully I am sorted, I have had a couple of offers to send me one. Strange it doesn't seem to be available from Yamaha or even listed!!
