RS250 swingarm conversion

#1 Post by kpke » Fri May 09, 2014 12:10 am

Has anyone grafted the Aprillia RS250 swinger on to the RZ? How about the front end? I think I've seen this done.

Links to threads or pictures would be greatly appreciated :smt023

Thanks.

I am in the process of doing it, I machined my swing arm to fit into the RZ frame, I think it was about 7mm off of each side but need to check.
I am going to run the R wheel and rear brake etc. Not sure about sprocket yet as I need to measure the alignment, up front I am using GSXR 750 forks with the Aprilia front wheel.
This project is on hold at the moment until I finish my other RZ I am in the process for restoring. See here!

Did it on an LC350. Now with an RZ bottom end 421 top.
Had to split the frame at the rear and open it up from memory about 40 mill. Lots of other work as well.
The rz frame is wider at the pivot point, so may be less work.
I have about 2mill clearance from the back of the engine to the swingarm. so its very tight.
Also the chain runs through the Aprillia Swinger, and I have warned people that if you shave the swinger you may find it impossible to line up anything. Just my two bobs, as I have spent many hours cutting, grinding, welding, string lining and crying.
As it stands on the lc/rz421, I have an 18 offset with an LC primary sprocket bush, the LC bush is narrower than the RZ.
So my real off set is about 14mm. But I did machine the rear hub, took 3 mil from it. All to get that chain going through the swinger to the primary with the engine sitting straight in the bike and the wheels lined up. (its not a simple thing to do )
I put an RS250 front in, which was fairly straight forward, just sleeved the bottom of the goosneck on the frame slightly and a couple of spacers under the APE tapered cup and race to get the top thread and nuts about right. Top bearings I left as is, LC OEM cup and ball set up, fitted perfect. (Sounds easy but it took me a few days to get the front on).
Turns like an Albertross, (that's not a good turning circle).
All in all I am glad I did it, as a lot of forums (not this one) said it could not be done.
Its an awesome bike to ride, handles as well as I can push it on the streets with the 421. I love it.
I did build (now sold) an RGV suspended RZ350. Much easier, and if I was to go out on a limb, felt like it handled better.
If I was to ever build another hybrid. I would use an RGV swinger in an RZ frame. And run the RS250 MK1 front suspension.
I would then try and fit the RS250 rear wheel into the RGV swinger. I love the RS Wheels.
Im tired cant type any more, hope this gives food for thought and research.

Thanks seahorse. Your conversion looks excellent.

Sadly I was not able to pick up the parts as a package like I wanted to. Now they have been pieced out. So unless another set of parts comes up this RS conversion is out for me. :smt010

Awesome job seahorse, That is a great looking set up!
I think I will just go the RS250 swingarm and frame route with the help of fast from the past RS/RZ conversion.
I think the benefits in the long run will be better, Thx for the pics
