Has anyone had any problems setting up an R6 rear shock?

#1 Post by mike YPVS » Sat May 31, 2014 8:07 pm

I recently fitted an R6 rear shock but I am having trouble getting the correct static sag at the rear. I now have the shock on it's hardest setting but it still seems to be a little soft.

Anyone had similar problems?

I've heard of this before, don't get me wrong, suspension guru im not.
I did a conversion a few years ago using the said shock. And it was a bit soft. I have since sold the bike. But alas I did pass the following here say information onto the new owner.
Apparently you can buy different rated springs for them. So once you find out what yours is, I guess you may then be able to buy a stiffer spring.
food for thought.

I did this a few weeks ago

I have the shock on soft everything , I find its near perfect , for sure dont want it any softer

maby you can take the spring off and get a little 5mm spacer and try to compress the sprig more the spring up

What's your static sag like?

Mine is now on the hardest setting and the bike drops 23mm when it's on it's wheels and 64mm when I sit on it.

From what i understand I should be looking for 5 to 10mm and 27 to 35 mm

The spacer may be the way to go, or better still a new spring with a higher rating from K Tech or similar

This is a typical problem when upgrading to R6 shock. What I did was to use the stock RD spring in the R6 shock, but you need to fix the length of the springs also, you will see that in my build thread, ... It is perfect (I weight 85 kg)

r6 shock on 4th setting and n2 one on 5 they measure the same length when fitted to the shock

i need a buddy to help me measure the static . at a guess its about the same as yours

my plan if i found the r6 to hard would be to put the stock spring on . i dont see how putting the stock spring would make it harder

You need to change the R6 spring because this is so soft. You maybe can put the RD 350 spring but it is so large. 1,5 cm more.

And then you need this piece. A friend of me made this.

It seems I am not alone then. I do really need to stronger spring for my R6 shock.

It would seem that with so many people fitting the R6 shock to their YPVS bikes, anyone who could make/sell the spacers could make some money!

Very true Mike, I am keen to try one of these spacers and report back, but using the old RD/RZ spring on the R6 shock seems a good solution, tho what does a new aftermarket spring cost for an R6 in a greater weight?

I have only had a quick look around, not really researched it but £85 is what I found.

I would rather have a new spring than use the old one.

Not terrible value, and sounds like a better plan to me too too. I would think the weight might be slightly different for the R6 vs the RZ application, but it cant be that far off and so long as its more than what the standard spring has it should work better.

Even with spending on a new spring this is would be a cheaper option for a multi adjustable shock than the brand new aftermarket setups, I do wish I had the ability to try various spring rates and report back, would be a fun exercise.

I agree Jon, if the standard spring is a little too soft on the highest preload, a slightly harder spring should bring in back into adjustment.

I also agree, even with a new spring it's still a cost effective conversion. I just wish I had known this when I had the bike in bits, it would have saved time stripping it again.

I will let the spring supplier know how much it's dropping, they may be able to work out how much more "spring" I need.

Ok, here goes!

Just spoken to the guy's at K Tech. They can supply new springs for this shock in 5 (whatever) increments. He told me the standard R6 shock (ours) is 90 (whatever). I asked if he could tell me how much more I would need to lift the bike to the recommended static sag. He said, he would rather have a standard YPVS spring to see what they are, and they supply the same for the R6 shock. Does anyone know what the standard YPVS shock is so I don't have to pull my old shock apart and posting it (that's if I still have it, as I may have thrown it away).

Cost for these springs are £85 inc VAT.

Mike
