Hi Off Road, welcome to the conversation. Very interesting stuff!!!!

What does stand out a mile is 1. the standard spring on the YPVS is 10.5, and the R6 is 9.3. So the R6 has a softer spring to begin with. 2. Fitting an R6 rear shock to a YPVS lifts the rear of the bike at least an inch, so I must assume that it's a longer shock. 3. You say installing a longer shock increases the leverage in the system and makes the spring appear to be softer.

If I add all these together:- R6 has a softer spring as standard, coupled with a longer length which increases the leverage in the system. = Result, my yamaha is dragging it's arse on the floor!

So, are my calculations (nowhere near as complicated as yours) pretty close? Will a 12.5 spring on the R6 shock get me in the right ballpark so that I will be able to dial it in with the many preload settings on the R6 shock? or is 12.5 still too soft?

Mike, without a friend to measure the sag with me on the bike, I did manage to get two reading so far:

Measured from under the rear axle bolt to the side panel, going behind the muffler and passenger peg, to bottom edge of point where side and tail panels meet:

1, On center stand, wheel is slightly off floor, turns without rubbing: 42cm.

2, Bike off center stand and stood on its wheels: 40cm.

Thanks Jon

So yours is pretty close to mine, you have a 20mm drop under it's own weight. I measured 23mm, that's close enough for me.

You should be looking for a drop a lot less than that with just the bikes weight, about 5mm is right. What preload is your R6 shock set at?

I needed MAX to get my 23 mm

I give in! just found out I can only get springs as hard as 105 n/m for this R6 shock.

I will be fitting the correct YSS rear shock.

Damn, still every cloud... can you report on how the YSS goes and how you like it. I have YSS on my XT500 and like them, I might be tempted to use these on the RZ as well.

Well, I have sold a lot of YSS twin shocks over the years, mainly for the Suzuki GT750's .

YSS used to produce budget shocks but they moved up a gear a few years ago.

Just ordered it online, collect it in the morning, bike back on the road by the afternoon. Can't have my bike in bits during the summer lol

Well, I removed the R6 shock this morning. Here is the evidence that it was too soft. This shock as been on my YPVS for less than 100 miles. The bump stop has been crushed to death, it was certainly not like this when it was fitted.

Your R6 shock is defective. Has to be to look like that. Hard to judge how effective it really is when it doesn't work properly.

I will find out tmw, I am having it looked at.

The thing is, it's only the spring that can cause that.

I've never seen it happen with the R6 shock on an RZ350. I couldn't get mine to do that if I weighed 300 pounds.

With stock linkage and a serviceable R6 shock that should never happen. I've bought several shocks and seen many, many more and have never seen the stop get crushed. Bizarre.

mine defo doesnt have the stop crushed but mine does drop the same on the static sag. My shock was a really nice condition unit out of a very low miles bike, something like 1200miles and looked like new when I got it. All very interesting. Loving the YSS unit, I remember i had the XT500 units on my desk for ages when I bought them, they just looked that nice! :)

Well I have no idea why it would'nt work for me.

Image

It looks fine, and the guy at the suspension shop said even if non of the internals worked, it's the spring that controls the soft/hard feel.

The shock must work ok , it felt ok and even passed the MOT test a couple of weeks ago with it fitted.
