Side stand mount

#1 Post by steveloomis » Tue Jul 01, 2014 7:02 pm

A few months ago while working on the bike with the side stand in use, it started to fall over. The welds on the side stand had broken and it just started to fall to the left. I caught it before it hit the ground. The weld on the underneath side had broken and tore the tubing. The top weld held on so it did not break off completely. Needless to say, I could not ride for fear of the frame collapsing. A welder friend finally had the time to stop by with his Argon shielded plasma torch and some kind of welding rod plus tons of skill. Here is what the top weld looks like, bottom is the same but hard to get a good pic.

I had disconnected everything electrical to keep any surge currents away from electronic components. He said it was not necessary as his ground for the torch was very close to the welding area. I played it safe and so far no damage. I have since repainted the areas. Frame was powder coated, can't really repair that easily so just painted for now so it will not rust.

I'd consider having that area reinforced.

Very nice job. As you said your mate has skills. That will be the strongest part of the frame.

I asked about reinforcing the area, he said it is stronger than before. He does this for a living and does weld tubing all the time in the oil field. I believe him.

My thoughts are rust on the inside of the tubing. That was all.

One of my pet peeves are those guys who spin their bike around solely on the sidestand. It drives me nuts!
Now I am sure a few guys will chime in and say its great.....

I agree with your pet peeve, my son does this to his R6. After seeing my RZ stand, he may think about not doing this again. I have not asked, but he may have done this to my RZ. All I know is that just working on it, it just started to fall. No sitting on it, nothing. I usually park it on the center stand in the garage.

I thought the weld quality would be appreciated, I've already painted it. I'll pass on to him the favorable comments on his ability...

Drives me nuts as well.... just saw a cbr1000 Repsol that where it's kickstand broke in half.
Not sure if this was the cause, but I suspect so.
