Clutch workout

#1 Post by Consciousness » Tue Aug 12, 2014 11:57 pm

Since i got my RZ back a week ago i've ridden it around the city about a 100 miles and at this point i'm having to pull back with my arm to get the clutch in such is the soreness in my wrist and hand. I'm around 155lb and generally pretty physical although i dont work out, yet (is that a tummy?).

My bike has kevlar clutch plates and 3 springs replaced with HD springs of an unknown source but i imagine barnett's. The clutch bites nicely and never slips but it is too stiff for constant clutch work in the city.

Any suggestions?

Only use it to slip into and out of gears. Just a slight pull in. Pop into neutral for stop lights. 2 fingers are all I ever use. Your only issue should be launching. If that proves to be an issue, go back to stock springs....or as my coworkers always tell me, "Throw away your purse."
As mentioned, it could be your cable.

Really, is there a way to lube the cable even if it's only to see if it is the issue and then replace it?

Cables are cheap as chips and you may find the banshee one fits your bike, if so get an OEM done, job done...

Unhook both ends and push the cable both ways. It should be easy to do, with no binding or sticking. If it won't flow freely, replace it!

As repeatedly suggested; Buy an Oem Yama clutch cable.
Preferably one from a newer Bike, featuring both ends threaded.
Refit Stock springs.
Best part about these bikes was/is their soft clutch lever/feel.
IF the clutch subsequently slips.. Machine it a bit to accept/allow another friction and steel in the stack.
Yes it's easily possible.

Check your cable routing also. An improperly routed cable can make the lever pull difficult.

I have FZ plates and springs in mine and the lever pull is easy. Check your rigging and installation again. It sounds like there is more to it than the 3 longer springs.
