Steering head bearings

#1 Post by Consciousness » Sun Aug 24, 2014 1:11 pm

I need new steering head bearings and was putting in an order for a rad cap at economy cycle and saw these http://www.economycycle.com/servlet/the ... tem/Detail are they good and is this a fair price? Would the members here recommmend something else? Also how involved is changing them, will i need special tools to remove the old bearings and insert the new ones. I'm pretty new at working on the bike but have had the carbs off to strip and clean, not much else really.

Thanks

Look for the same on Ebay....should find them much cheaper.
I put tapered bearings on mine back in 85, made a big difference.
Changing them is pretty basic

Second that, I got them cheaper on ebay and it made a big difference because my ball bearings where flat spotted.

Really helps if you have 2 sets of hands, so get a mate to help preferably, one with a really nice garage!

Many thanks. What are your views on Angular contact bearings, could they be the next step up in precision? If so i have been in contact with FAG Bearing manufacturer who will custom size a set, min order is yet to be confirmed although i mentioned 50 and pushed for samples but no go on the samples. Thought i'd test the waters for interest.

I'll see if my gf can help out with the change over, scratch that if she chips a Chanel covered nail i'll never hear the end of it lol
