Bought an '89 FZ600 swinger off E-Bay last night.

#1 Post by hondaror » Mon Jan 05, 2015 4:15 pm

I've been searching for one of these for quite while. I found it in the UK, paid $62.++ CND for it. Will cost me about $150 with shipping. I'm pretty stoked about it.
Now I can start sourcing a front end and wheels. I have the R6 shock as well. This will be for my superstreet build.

I want to run 17's front and back. I'm partial to the 3 spoke units out there. Front wheels are plentiful. What rear 17" wheel is available? Do I have to go with an R1?

Rory, older gsxr wheel is the one you probably want to use. 89 gsxr 750 is probably the one you want with a gs 500 cush drive

hmm... Rory, why didnt you ask me? I still have a FZ600 swinger for sale in Florida, with wheel, brake etc etc and comes with R6 front end, also with brakes, wheel, triples etc. If anyone wants this lot it would be cheaper than buying piecemeal for sure...

I went with the `89 GSXR750 rear wheel and GS500 cush. The Katana 600 of the same era used the same rear wheel. I've seen a few bikes using a first gen SV650 rear wheel if you want to run the strait spoke wheels which are lighter.

I wanted to have a matching wheels, so I went with a `91 GSXR750/1100 front. I wanted radial brakes and better forks than the first gen R1, so I'm using `04 GSXR600 forks with `98-01 R1 triples. The rotor spacing is spot on and no need to shim the rotors out. The gixxer forks have a 25mm axle, so you need to do a bearing swap and make a new inner hub spacer, and the two outer wheel spacers. You also need to shim the calipers out 5mm as the early 750/1100 rotors are 310mm. You can use washers, but I made 5mm spacers for a cleaner look. It's an easy install.

I used an FZR600 front and rear. Front is a bit dated but at least it is dual caliper. Three spokes and cheap!

That's perfect. Looks really good. I may have Jon's parts coming, old R6 regular forks, GSXR rear wheel, both 3 spoke, still waiting for a shipping quote. I will keep my eyes peeled for the old FZ600 stuff though. I have 5 rollers to work with.

FZR600 forks are 38mm :smt023

I believe the old-style R6 forks are a bit bigger than that.

I think the R6 forks are bigger than the 38mm of the FZ.

Last night I purchased an R6 shock on EBay, and I'm impressed with their new format. The swinger and the shock had final prices that are calculated by EBay, as shipped from their hub location. It takes away from the goofy shipping prices you used to see that varied so much. The shock was $10 US+$40 US for shipping. Not too bad. Shock delivered for $60CND.
The swinger was $62CND and cost me $150CND inclusive, delivered.
Overall, I'm really happy.
