Tapered bearings ..

#1 Post by speedjunkie_69 » Sat Feb 21, 2015 12:51 pm

Hello there

I brought my old steering head tapered bearing to a bearing distributor asking for new and they couldn't help me out. They even measured the OD and looked in their catalogue and zilch :smt017 Apparently the number stamped on my bearings/races are not standard?? Mine are stamped 30YM on the bearing and 48Y MC1 on the race. I emailed ALL BALLS and they couldn't help me either. anybody know what bearing/race number I need?

thanks again

Norm

I didn't know the 4lo shared the same bearings with the rz. When I contacted All Balls they told me that they didn't carry my model but they do carry the rz350? That simplifies things but I'd still appreciate the bearing numbers if possible. Are pyramid part bearings from china?

I think All Balls is an American company, and the US never got the LC. Not much of a market for them. ...but they should know about the crossover.

I've used Allballs in all my bikes that need tapered bearings, good product, highly doubt they are made anywhere but China for the price. I use nothing but Pyramid fork seals now, another good supplier of after market parts, I believe they're Australian.

I have always thought that All balls and Pyramid shared a bearing supplier but someone tested them and found the all balls units to be better, that hasnt been my experience but its documented so I will ref it. Cant remember the link tho, oops.

I found All BALLS for an '84 Rz in stock thru parts Canada. Going to order tomorrow. I find it still weird that even a Canadian distributor doesn't list the 4lo in their parts catalogue. I guess they don't consider the crossover between models.
thanks for the help :smt001

They are lasy sellers , they are using US part lists , try getting parts for a 1983 Honda CBX550 ( Cdn. only in N.America ) from an after market dealer .

Speedjunkie , how do they fit on your RZ , tapered bearings whit cups must be much thicker than ball bearing . Did it change something in the
length of your T . or the top yoke position ?

I had them installed back in the day when the bike (4LO) was still on the road but had no issue or difference from the OEM ball bearings. I wasn't planning on replacing them during my restoration but damaged them :smt009 trying to take them off to clean up the triple clamp. Live and learn!

Went on the All Balls website and ordered the size they recommended for 4l0. The picture says it all - ok on top but not on the bottom. Might try the Pyramids or go back to ball bearings temporily. Still working on the rear shock issue - heard a schrader valve ($50 in-stall) might work but don't know what the nitrogen/oil capacities are yet.
