Ninja650 4.5x17" rear wheel in a swing arm conversion?
Anyone ever use one of these or try one on a bike with one of the common swingarm conversions?
As stated the wheel is 4.5x17", the axle I think is 22mm so that creates some work but other than that it is unknowns as far as sprocket alignment ect...
Just curious as these wheels are plentiful and cheap and have a modern look

Re: Ninja650 4.5x17" rear wheel in a swing arm conversion?
Thats about what i figure, typically with conversion swap mods where there is a will there is a way. I don't have access to as many rgv parts here in the US. This ninja wheel might be a good substitute and they are pretty cheap so even if it doesn't work it won't break the bank.
Re: Ninja650 4.5x17" rear wheel in a swing arm conversion?
Yep you can make anything fit and work, but the RGV conversion is well thought out and works, plus you can buy the parts for the suspension easily etc, hence why you see so many. Maybe if you can find someting with the same suspension layout and geometry you could use the RGV plates and go from there. Intersted to see what you do... the usual issue is that the RX is thin in the swingarm area compared to a modern bike, but anything is possible. weve seen R1 and Aprilia before, but they involve splitting the frame, I dont like that idea, but thats just me...

Re: Ninja650 4.5x17" rear wheel in a swing arm conversion?
ill probably stick with a tried and true swing arm conversion but might try and get this ninja650 wheel to work in the swingarm.
i might have a line on an fz600 swing arm + extras, hoping it comes through, the only vj22 or 23's i see r on ebay from uk and they typically go for around $300 after shipping.

Re: Ninja650 4.5x17" rear wheel in a swing arm conversion?
I'm not sure how big a wheel will fit in the FZ swinger and while its easy for me to say that I would get the 22/23 unit, its a beauty and much more modern, but for you its not cheap... but worth it perhaps to be different and for how well it works?

Re: Ninja650 4.5x17" rear wheel in a swing arm conversion?
^ I hear ya, I debate this every other day. I don't need the swinger for a little bit yet so I am holding out hope I will snag one.
time will tell

Re: Ninja650 4.5x17" rear wheel in a swing arm conversion?
well lightning struck, I snag a vj22 and some small odds and ends that go with it on flea bay from Japan. Pictures looked good, time will tell when i get it in my hands. $100 + shipping but i was able to lump some other things into the shipping charge so it didn't sting too bad. About the cheapest i have come across one for a while. The ones from UK seem to go for a good bit more than that + more for shipping than i paid ta boot
I still need lots of odds and ends for my project but i have 2 biggies out of the way, i just need to stay away from ebay for a few weeks or at least until i sell some more stuff But what the wife doesn't know doesn't hurt her
Since the Ninja650 wheels are so cheap and available + they somewhat match the front wheel i am going to go with i will most likely pick one up and see how it goes. I don't anticipate anything crazy to make it work but will know more when i have all the pieces of the puzzle.
Once i get some more of my recently purchased parts in i can finally start updated my project thread!!

Re: Ninja650 4.5x17" rear wheel in a swing arm conversion?
I have put a late model 750 Katana 4.5x17 in an RGV swinger, using a GSXR rotor and a GS500 cush drive. The main challenges are making the caliper and rotor work together (diameter and alignment) and lining up the sprocket. If the axle diameters are different you have that added challenge. You need to get it in the swinger, centered and lined up with the front wheel to assess how much work you have on the brake side, I used a custom caliper bracket to mount a 2 piston Brembo. Sprocket offset is fairly easy. The RZ engine can be all over the place in the mounts, line up to the front wheel, not the front sprocket. Fishing line and plumb lines will get you closer than Yamaha factory tolerances. I can take some pics is you want.

^ I may take you up on the pictures when I get around to getting my hands dirty and thanks for the advice, it will go a long way.

Re: Ninja650 4.5x17" rear wheel in a swing arm conversion?
quick question, I have searched the forum but sometimes it is hard to dig up little tid bits of info with so many posts/threads coming up with key word hits.
What are the recyclable rz parts for the vj22 swingarm conversion if any? mainly thinking of the various linkage bits, pivot bolt, bearing type stuff. Is any of this useful with the vj22 arm or does it all need to go for new/rgv bits?
I have a complete rgv linkage coming with the swingarm but I don't have the pivot bolt
