No Chassis/ case protection?

No Chassis/ case protection?
I'm surprised to see that after searching Frame sliders there have only been a couple threads and no responses. I know some of these bikes have made it to track days but does no one use them?
I made a set for my wife's Repsol 250 but the RZ is not quite as easy. Just wondering what others may have done, mounting points ect...

Re: No Chassis/ case protection?
weird i was thinking about this subject myself .
at least the rz is a perimeter frame ,unlike the RD .
maybe only some case protection for the RD.

Yeah, the bars (clipons) I guess are pretty much consumables, and I don't really see much protection for the tank but the engine IMO is the part I REALLY want to protect anyhow. Most of the other stuff I have isn't RZ anymore anyhow. It would suck to damage the frame but there's not much to do about that that I can see.

Re: No Chassis/ case protection?
Meh, side covers are cheap. Not sure what other part of the engine you could grind off. Frame is all steel and I believe they tend to slide on bar ends, tank sides and subframes. Not sure what all you can do about that. Modern spar frame can go in the garbage if you grind through it. these old ones just bend and get scratched.
I wouldn't worry about it too much. There were entire RZ race series in Canada. It was the clip-ons/bodywork/tanks/forks that took the brunt. We arent' talking about minor crashes either. Have had a few of those bikes and the engines didn't have any majorly noticeable damage.
Something to do with the light-weight as well maybe?

Re: No Chassis/ case protection?
Yamaha sold some small crash bars for the LC .
Re: No Chassis/ case protection?
I think frame sliders would be a good idea, but as far as using them on a track bike that's a no-no. Frame sliders are for dropping the bike in a parking lot or at slow speed. Going down at high speed, the puck can catch and tear or bend the frame. You never see frame sliders on any race bike. If anything maybe axle sliders, and Ive only seen that on supermoto

Re: No Chassis/ case protection?
I've highsided my 84 Canadian at 110 mph plus and only bent a clutch level. Me? I was fucked and almost died.
Whereas I lowsided my '05 R6 at 70 mph and did $3,000 in damage.
Both are/were dedicated track bikes.
Food for thought...

"You never see frame sliders on any race bike." Not meaning to argue, and I do see your point but I have seen them on track (maybe not race) bikes.
Also some of these pieces are getting hard to come by, fairing parts for the bikini style are pretty pricey IMO when they come up. I'm seriously looking into any sort of a cheap donor chassis even if it is something like a gixer600 just to avoid the parts aggravation. Unfortunately bikes like the rs250 are not so common and bikes like the FZ400 are out of date and seem to have a following leading to higher prices as well. Finding a small enough donor that is/was made in quantities to keep the prices low enough seems a bit tough.

Re: No Chassis/ case protection?
Frame sliders can go both ways. If you crash and your bike stays on the track all is well. If your bike goes off the pavement into the dirt, sliders are just another area where the bike can dig in and when this happens you don't want to see the results.

Brilliant, the guys stands up in time to see the bike still ripping itself to pieces and spewing its guts across the grass.

Yep, for some reason i had an involuntary fit of laughter and that gif pretty much summed it up. Of course if it were me i would not be crying tears of laughter. I never saw a bike rip itself to pieces like that ever, i don't think you could do better with the jaws of life.RuZty wrote:Brilliant, the guys stands up in time to see the bike still ripping itself to pieces and spewing its guts across the grass.
And yes the ultimate humiliation, he is made to watch while his baby gets torn limb from limb. I think i'm gonna throw up.
