1981 LC steering damper

#1 Post by John » Tue Dec 22, 2015 7:09 pm

Hi all.
Been lurking reading all the tech info here.
I'm restoring an 81 LC and need to know what options are out there for steering dampers.

about 73 pounds for the damper and fitting kit.

i am sure there are other versions

and I think JonW has a trick one fitted to a hybrid.

The best option is well sorted bike and then you won't need a steering damper.

The LC was always a bit flighty at speed, you can ride it out but a damper does help.

My setup is probably not to everyones taste if its a restoration, but its on my 2smoked.com website if you want to take a look, under the 421 build, on the Chassis page at the bottom.

Thanks.
It's not a restoration as such, maybe re-furbish would be a more accurate description. Not concerned with keeping it original, more functional.

True. Mine has been super stable for the last few years but has developed a bit of slop in fast sweepers recently. Solo said he used bronze swingarm bushings when he built it and nothing feels obviously loose so I'm not sure the exact cause. I am considering going to the needle bearing conversion on the swingarm as it is reasonably inexpensive and easy to do.

If the bike has a wobble or weave due to the swingarm bearings or head bearings then I wonder what effect the steering damper would have as that would just push the weave from one end of the bike to the other.

Sighting the wheels is really important on the LC. Don't trust the notch adjustment on the swinger, or the measurement to the swing arm bolt centre.
