Linear Front fork springs

#1 Post by mike YPVS » Tue Feb 02, 2016 11:02 am

After searching the web I could not find any uprated linear fork springs for my YPVS

So, I am having some made, I am just wondering if anyone else would be interested in purchasing any from me?

Race-Tech makes 'em for 84-89.

Yes! I believe they do. The problem is, when I approached them to purchase a pair they told me I couldn't purchase them from their website and I couldn't pay with paypal. I wasn't prepared to send my credit card details to somebody I didn't know at the other side of the world by email.

Anyway, the manufacturer that I am dealing with now will make them to my specs.

I still have the problem that I wouldn't put my credit card details into an email that anyone could read.

I also believe that those figures are too hard. If the standard is 45kg/mm , 90kg/mm is DOUBLE the strength! Are you saying Yamaha was that far out with their calculations? I think not. but hey that's just my opinion.

The springs start at .60 KG. I do believe a phone call would suffice for ordering. Surely there's a Race Tech affiliate in the UK.

Or you could FAX them here. 951.284.0417 (International Sales)

There is this little notice on this page: http://racetech.com/ProductSearch/2/Yam ... 50/1984-89" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

"Fork spring rates below .80kg requires Modified FRSP 2550 springs."

May be too hard for you, The racetech calculator recommends the following for an 80KG rider

FRONT FORK SPRINGS
Recommended Fork Spring Rate: 0.79 kg/mm (use closest available)
Stock Fork Spring Rate: .450 kg/mm(stock)

The spring is matched to the weight of the rider and the bike to get you in the ball park of what can be adjusted with pre-load and the forks dampening characteristics. If you are double the weight (or more) of the 50kg Japanese test rider these were designed with then yea.. I'd probably want a stiffer spring.

Yes! I needed stronger springs so I had some made. About 60kg/mm, I don't want to overpower the damper.

I remember the hassle I had with trying to fit an R6 rear shock, I was told by a bike suspension specialist that it's ok fitting a stronger spring but you have to be able to dampen that spring. The YPVS front forks aren't exactly high tech, the only option would be seriously thick oil.

i went through this deal with my Rd400
which uses a similar kg spring and fork design
thats what i got .80 springs
they were solid as hell ,made the dam bike feel like a ridgid chopper , in the end i sent them back and a big cost to me

the .60kg sound good . or even .55kg all depends how soft you feel the front is now

Thanks nzminis, that's my point exactly!

When I told this spring manufacturer that most people go for .90kg/mm his answer was "B---dy H--l you do realize that it an 100% increase". Together we opted to go for .60kg, I will try that, and have more made if it proves to be too hard.

The original purpose of this thread was to let people know that I could have fork spring sets made for them. For any bike, in any strength (within reason) Like your RD400 for example!

In the USA Cannon Racecraft will make any spring you want for a decent price.

Mike please let us know how the perform. Also maybe would help if we knew your rider weight as in respect to spring rate. Thx

I have used Cannon Racecraft as well for my various vintage mx bikes. Good people to deal with and for us on this side of the pond, a great resource.
