LC2 Swingarm Bush

#1 Post by nath » Wed Feb 10, 2016 12:58 am

Any advice on removing the bush from the LC2 swingarm, So far I've tried a slide hammer with heat applied but its well and truly in there.

Thinking I might have to rig something up in the press

you need to remove the central collar first, should push out even when rusty, then you can drift out the bushes from the other side.

Yea, figured as much, taken out plenty of the later model bearings with no dramas, these are just being a far more troublesome.

Ive had a bunch of these that have been hard work over the years but really heat and the right amount of force will sort them :)

Man.. what a PITA...

Nothing I had in the tool box would get the little bastard out.. Couldn't find a suitable drift/punch so ended up at Bunnings buying a piece of metal rod, chopped it to size, hardened one of the ends, $7 well spent.

Heated the Swingarm up on a gas burner and managed to get one out with a decent amount of effort, no way the other one was coming out the same way... with the one bush out though I could get a socket in with a similar OD in there and got the swingarm in the press which persuaded the other bush out..

wow, never known them to be this hard to remove. you could also have cut the bushes with a saw blade to weaken them of course. Ive known needle roller cages to be hard work, but never bushes :(

Yea, these were the easily hardest things I've ever hd to get out of any RZ component.

They appear to have Red Loctite (or something similar thats red) on them, wasn't expecting that from the factory so perhaps added by someone later.

Could be the case that I didn't get them to 260 deg. to break the bond so was fighting it the whole time.

Thanks for the offer mate, I have a few spare myself already though :)

I'm building an LC2 at the moment, I was tempted to use one of the spare 84'+ ones I have, so much easier as the bearings are easily obtainable and I have some good pivot shafts.

Decided to stick with the original for better or worse with its pitted bushes and pivot which i'm replacing.

Long shot but If you or anyone else local has a 83' LC2 pivot shaft thats in serviceable condition it would save me some $$$ over a new one, Yambits has the set for $140

Is the yambits part OEM? if so thats cool.

Also check youre ordering the right part against the parts book for your bike no matter who you order from, im not sure if theyre different or not and I think they are not, but it would suck to buy the wrong one of course.

I had one really stuck on an H2. I had to use a small hacksaw blade and carefully cut a groove through the insert. It then folded up like a piece of wet cardboard once the cut was made. It was a pain and it took a long time cutting by hand but it worked.

The worst one I had with this part of the bike was on a DT200R when the swinger bolt/pin rusted to the collar thats runs thru the bushes, I had to cut the pin off at both ends! span the pin and rested a hacksaw blade on it jammed between the frame and the seals :(
