Be prepared to spend a bit, a quality TIG machine with HF so you can weld aluminum is several grand new. If you can find a good used one for under $1500 you are doing well. I just spent the week getting my 6G high pressure pipe and all position aluminum (TIG) certifications and wouldn't mind finding a good one myself.

Good work RuZty!

I was in the ballpark for cost. Have TIG but it does not have AC. Kind of sad since most fab work on motorcycles really should be done in alum.

Looks like some good info on the German site. I may have to spend some time over there.

If ya gona get on it might as well be a plasma as well. And if ya dont want to use it full time some of the Chinese ones are good value.

I bought my current AC/DC TIG in 2013 for around 650 Euro.
You need to add some 70 for a food pedal remote control, 40 for a pressure regulator.
Argon is around 50 Euro for a 20 l bottle filling.
Then you'll want some appropriate needles and gas lenses which add another 50.
In total I spend much less than 1000 for the equipment and ever after I don't need to beg anyone to weld something (to be honest it's the other way now ...)
Bye

One of the instructors mentioned a brand I hadn't heard of; http://www.everlastwelders.ca/powertig-200-dx-d.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Great price, about what you would pay for a well used Miller or Lincoln machine, but I would want to hear from someone who had put some time on one or have a good warranty before I bought one. Plasma cutting in the same machine would be nice, they have one for $250 more; http://www.everlastwelders.ca/multipurp ... ro-206.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

A Cagiva Mito 125cc roller was posted on the for sale section a couple of years ago. I'm still kicking myself for not picking that one up. Not many in Canada.

I 've seen some really nice rz conversions with the Mito rocking current gen r6 bodywork. I've also seen that chasis with rz500 engine too! Wish i could find that link again.

I think a gsxr750 slingshot frame would be a neat choice. Pick up a high mile complete bike for cheap and rebuild it. Parts are affordable and easy to get.

Someone has put an extended swingarm on the one in the pic, but the specs say 1400mm/ 55.1 inches.

sometimes people get ideas in doing projects that they don't have the capabilities. I know RGVSteve and Brian Turfrey have done projects for me, but I could never weld like them.

The Aprillia frame takes a VJ22 engine. Again from my mistakes I realized you must use a frame that had a parallel engine.

I have a complete slingy that needs a new motor with upgraded USD front end sitting in my garage. Anyone have a link to a conversion?

Also, that is a slabby, 1st gen frame in the pics provided (85-87) Slingy is 88-89.

You get capabilities by having ideas and the passion to make them real. The important part is getting a deep enough understanding of what you are doing or knowing someone who does so that you don't suffer too much along the way.

I partially agree with you. The part I disagree is when you make it sound so easy for welding. The welding takes years of practice. A couple of good examples are RGVSteve and Brian Turfrey. RGVSteve is in his sixties. He was train in the Air Force and in high school. He worked in the Kennedy Space center and on the Shuttle program. That reflects years of experience especially what you are proposing for anyone to cut up a frame. Then we get to Brian Turfrey. Brian started when he was 15 and he progress and continue with racing bikes and doing pipes for his 250 team and the Kenny Roberts team. I realized my limitations because of my age. If I was younger I would like to know how to weld.

I'm glad this has been done. I have that frame for an RZ race bike.

Any more info on who did this?
