Can someone pls confirm this is a VJ22 swingarm and OK to us

#1 Post by beady » Wed Jun 08, 2016 11:39 pm

So I’ve had this swingarm for 13 years and finally want to get around to using it. I think it’s a VJ22, but not sure? Also now that I look at it for the first time in a decade it has more damage than I remember. Does it look like it will be OK to use? How can I tell?

The wheel is a 17x5 ZX6 I was going to try to use I think, but it may be more trouble than it’s worth as I read I can use an SV650 wheel and GS500E cush drive and it’s almost a bolt-on?

Does anyone make/sell a kit with the dogbones and anything else I need to run this swingarm in my RZ350?

Thanks,

Mike

Bloody hell mate it looks as if someone chucked her @ the scenery more than once.
Looks like the dent closer to the pivot, "may" have changed the geometry but the only way to tell is to build a jig.
Some have made custom dog bones from 7020, (I think) sheet.

ouch indeed...!

Ok, yes this does look like a P model RGV unit. NK sell the kits for this, or look at my site for the upgrade PDF for the RGVs.

If it is straight then you could consider a carbon cover to go over the damage

Someone does make them , just can't remember who at the moment !

Making a jig sounds like a reasonable idea; I have a friend with a welder.

I guess I could fill and sand the dents and paint the arm with a metallic wheel paint, then when I have everythign done buy a clean arm later?

Thanks,

Mike

Or, you could pull the dent and fill the gouges !
Find someone who can heliarc and you'll be all set.
Get it anodized if you like for corrosion for what you'd spend on a new one.

My friend has both MIG and TIG welders, so he could fill any low spots. My concern is metal/bodywork is more of an art and I am missing that gene, lol. Anything mechanical I can do no problem though.

any thought on going with a different swingarm. I had a VJ22 and a VJ23 on my 1990 RZ350. They are find, but you will encounter clearance issues with the pipes if you use GP style and if you use the brackets that bolt into the center stand bracket. I'm using TZR250 3XV swingarm and get rid of the center stand brackets for clearance for the pipes.

Another arm is not out of the question, I just had this arm up in the attic from 13 years ago and like the banana look. I’m torn on the GP-style pipes. Sometimes I love the look and think I have to have them, then other times I’m not so sure. The regular Lomas pipes look great too, IMHO. I don’t have a centerstand either.

Thanks for your thoughts,

Mike

the reason for the banana and gp pipes. also removing the center stand bracket was for Brian Turfrey to have room to build the big cones under the bike
