#1 Post by 2bang » Thu Sep 01, 2016 10:00 pm

Hrm.. is this the correct forum?? Apologies if not..

What is the range of model years for donor FZ600 swingarms, to perform the swap?
Thanks!

Its traditionally the 1986-87 FZ600 only. They are aluminum swingarms as later FZRs utilized steel.
Getting harder to find, but generally inexpensive & a fairly straight foreward swap. Here is a basic rundown. You might also consider placing a request in the "wanted" section here as well for better visibility.

I used the '88 FZR400 but had to mill down & narrow the pivot to fit the frame.

Thanks Guys!!!

Questo... thanks for the link.... but I've read and read on here, and I have a very good sense of what it involves...
Now the hard part... (since waiting this long)... FINDING one!

I sure will try the wanted section, when I'm ready to pull the trigger...
As you may know, I like researching and gaining the knowledge... planning it out... aquiring the needed items..
WELL in advance of doing the project..

Thanks again!

Let me check, years ago i collected a swingarm to do the conversion, and ended up going in a completely different direction. I will try to check tonight when I get home. I know I've got one, I just can't remember exactly what model it is.
tuned to Paris Hilton specs............rich and retarded!

Just in case you dont gave a pic, here is what it looks like for visual reference. I have two conversions ready to install in boxes, But Unfortunatley im NOT selling them. Im savung them for a friends project. Its a nice conversion and all is avaiable online for parts & install.
I am using the FZR 400 RR swingarm on one of mine, wish I could source more but there really hard to locate, for reasonable prices as it was a Japan only model. You can see the diffrence between the two below.
The FZ swingarm mentioned above, I'm assuming is identical to the 86-86 FZ600 arm, as If I recall the 85-86 FZ400 was the same frame & bodywork (Japan only) & a late 1985 Japan only model.

I've got an FZ400 arm kicking around that looks like the one in the top picture if you want me to take some comparison dimensions. I bought it years ago and got as far as fitting adjusters for a 20mm axle and then found an RGV arm. The delta box ones pictured above are sweet, but rare. If you like the look there were similar arms on GSXR's in the early 90's and I recall seeing pics of one installed on an RZ.

I believe if you find the Delta box FZ400 swingarm you still need to weld in 2 pivot points. The 600 Delta would be a little easier to fit in that regard. I have one of each and it is shocking how much lighter the Delta is from RZ oem.

Do we know for certain that those GSXR arms will fit?

Yeah.... why not go ahead and measure it up.... lets see what that gives us..

Anything will fit with enough machining and/or welding, if it was easy there would likely be more info around. You would likely have to narrow the GSXR at the pivot and either adapt the GSXR linkage and geometry (like the RGV swap does) or modify the dogbones to work with the RZ linkage. Neither is a bolt in, but if you have the resources it might not be a big deal.
I'm pretty sure the bike I'm thinking of belonged to Brian Murphy on this page, http://www.lchr.org/a/44/hl/friends.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; , and there is a (bad) pic of the bike at bottom left.

I was digging for some saved files and came up with this pic;

Image

And here is the text of how it was installed;

The GSXR swing arm looks good but was difficult to install, Here is a list
of stuff I did.
1. Cut the Pivot section so that it will fit in the RZ frame, 12mm a side.
2. Had to grind out the bearing seats so I could relocate the stock GSXR
Bearings deeper in the pivot.
3. Had the RZ bushings ground to fit the inside ID for the Suzuki bearings.
This was hardened steel and had to use a centerless grinder.
4. Cut and and rewelded the GSXR dog bones removed 25mm, bolted them to the
RZ linkage.
5. I had to get a stiffer spring for my fox shox, from 550lbs to 700lbs.
6. Got an offset sprocket form RZ unlimited, Biggest one they make.
7. I had to machine back the GSXR sprocket carrier 8mm to line up the rear
with the front sprocket.
8. Machined up some spacers for the rear wheel too.
9. Useing this swing arm you have to relocate your rear brake master
cylinder and you will have to bend out your foot peg mounts.
a 160 is the widest tire you can mount and still get your chain to fit.

Note that these are not my words and I take no credit or blame, it's only something I copied off the internet a long time ago.

In my opinion this is a nice looking swap, not just plain box tubing, but also not overkill for the bike. I also found stuff for the FZR400 that I will post when I have a bit more time.

I guess you might as well, if you don't mind........ lets see what that gets us..
More knowledge is better than less..

I'm only looking to do it if its (relatively) simple..... like the FZ600 arm..
IF its simple like that... AND I can find one fairly easily, at something resembling a reasonable price.. I'll do it on this bike soon...
Otherwise, I'd rather just buy a Metmechex.
(by the time I'm done getting/doing everything, I'm halfway there cash-wise)

Its really meant for a next bike.... a "ground up" build.
Right now, I'm mainly gathering info/knowledge and parts... (since both take a long time, and I like to have everything needed before I start a project)

However... looking into this, and since I have a mostly complete front end and most everything for a swap.... and a rear wheel with much of the other needed rear parts............
I began to think.... well since this FZ swap is so simple/cheap.... wtf, might as well just do it.
TILL I discovered that the FZ600 arms are getting rare now...
Laws of supply and demand seem to apply....

BTW... I remember the bike in the pic from yrs ago... the purple fender is the give away :smt003 :smt017
