G'day race fans. Wondering what sort of weight an rz350 would be in race trim. all road gear removed. just a tacho, maybe tz style fiberglass seat. I'm thinking of building a track bike with whats laying around. i have some good low weight chambers. i weighed my street rz today with a full tank it came in at 175kg. that bike is a 31k with chambers. i'm thinking a stripped rz could be 20-25 kg lighter then street??

I put some '86 wheels on my '85, they were nearly 2 lbs lighter per wheel, and they look it.

I have a 31K, I just cut about 2 kg of tabs and frame tube off. Going to mount the AirTECH bodywork to. I'll do a weigh in when it's finished.

You are talking 55lbs lighter? I doubt it without some real cash.

The glass fairings are heavier than stock.

The pipes are most definitely lighter but less than everyone claims. "save 35 pounds on pipes!" Not a chance. Maybe 10?

5 pounds if you remove the plastic cladding, oil tank, pump etc.
10 pounds with your pipes
5 pounds with lightweight battery.
Pound for gauges
pound for shock
4 pounds for wheels
2 pounds F2 rearsets

Where does the last ~30 pounds come from?

mudguard/license bracket, tail light, grab handle, seat, headlight, signals, maybe chop down the fairing stay, superbike bars -> clip ons, kickstand, center stand . I'd say you're getting close to 30lbs.

You should be able to get close to 250 pounds if you got aggressive with the weight reduction, dry weight. Not an easy task.
Going premix and dumping the autolube system, kick starter and cluster is another good dump. As mentioned, signals, speedo, all associated wire, drilling all washers, lighter wheels, a seat kit is a helluva lot lighter then the seat, bracketry, and lighting, and rear bodywork. Cutting all associated tabs off the frame, cutting the clutch case excess off after oil pump removed, aluminum swingarm..and the list goes on.
The TZ250s of the early 80s were about 220 lbs dry.

My race RZ has 132kg with affordable effort.
R6 front end incl. brakes & rim, DIY aluminium tank and subframe, RGV swinger, 5x17 KTM spoked rear + cut off every bracket on the frame
Unfortunately the rider is constantly adding a few kg per year....

my race rz was also 290lbs (131kg) thats with
-going to 17" (1990 gsxr wheels)
-gpl pipes
-alu swingarm
-stripped out frame with gusseting added (it was still only 22 lbs)
-total loss ignition with tiny battery
-airtech bodywork/seat
-different forks
-custom alu. rearsets

I'm hoping to make some changes that will lower that some more. r6 front wheel (with only one brake rotor and caliper), yzf600 rear wheel (with swiss-cheese brake rotor), alu tank, and alu tail section.
i think that'll get it down another 10 lbs.

id love to do some more trick stuff like
switching out fasteners to Ti, Ti chambers, magnesium wheels, fiberglass/carbon tank.
BUT that shit is expensive! mag wheels would be at least $5k for 2 sets (slicks and rains)

Graham, as mentioned above. About 10 lbs above or below the 300 lb mark, is what you will be looking at, as stated anything below the 290 lb range, starts to cost serious money & customization $.

I would never expect to view a RZ anywhere below 270 lbs, no matter what even w everything listed above and adding carbon bodywork and rims & a couple thousand dollars of Titanium into the mix. At that point , there's just nowhere else to realistically go with what you have.

I bet you could get down to 170lbs with all the lightest stuff.
20 people donate me $1000.00 each and ill give it a real shot!
PM me for details on how to send me the money. ;-)

Adding lightness.....The key switch/steering lock is kind of heavy. You could remove that and substitute a plastic marine toggle switch. Racers have no need for a steering lock.
You can sub PVC pipe for your between-the-bearing wheel spacers as long as you can make a good straight cut on the PVC.
