1985 RZ350 Rear Wheel Rebuild

I'm restoring an '85 Canadian model RZ350 and whoever owned it before did NOT do a good job on the rear wheel. It was missing the "collar", part #90387-154A0-00, which goes between the two hub bearings. I found it in one of the boxes but the guy has cut it in half... WTF... anyways, they are not available anymore and I can weld this one, I just need to know what the length of this part is... looks to be about 87mm? Also, on the Canadian models I believe there is supposed to be an O-Ring in the rear hub, Part #93210-43580-00... found a parts diagram on a European site, https://www.bike-parts-yam.com/yamaha-m ... B28/0/6735" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; (part #7)... anyone know where this O-ring is actually supposed to get installed... pics would be awesome!!!

Thx

I would not weld a bearing spacer back together, if you get the length wrong or ends not perfectly square your wheel bearings will have a short life. It's just a tube with a specific length and ID, if someone happens to have their wheel bearings out and can measure one you could make or shorten a same ID one from another bike. I have both style RZ wheels at home on a shelf, I could measure outside width and subtract the bearing thickness to get you a length if you don't mind waiting a few days.

That would be great... if you happen to see where the O-Ring goes that would be great as well... thx

That spacer will be nothing more than a length of aluminum tubing. Super easy to make. The ID and OD clearances are not critical, it just needs to butt up against the two wheel bearing inner races to prevent them being deformed when the axle is tightened.

That O-ring is in an odd location and I'd bet it actually goes on the exterior of the bearing spacer to help keep that spacer aligned with the bearings. Otherwise the spacer can drop down and make getting the axle in a huge PIA.

I found where the O-Ring goes... around the outside of the hub, between the hub and the sprocket carrier. The OD of the spacer needs to be correct as there is a "Flange Spacer" that goes around the spacer/collar to ease with installation of the axle.

Thx for all the advice/help guys! BTW... anyone have an 84/85 gas tank.. mine has become a nightmare :(

Thx

Where are you located? Canada? Get a lined AirTECH unit. (Gas tank).

I remembered taking a pic of the spacer for Smoker a while back, you can see the flange on it in the pic posted in the following thread, it centers the spacer to simplify axle install. viewtopic.php?f=2&t=13779&p=139030&hilit=spacer#p139030" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I should have time to get a wheel down to measure tomorrow.

Yup, that’s what it’s for... just centres the spacer inside the hub to facilitate insertion of the axle.

Thx... I’ll look forward to hearing from you on the length of the spacer... it’s pretty critical the measurement is accurate or the bearings won’t last long... thx.

Are you taliking about the fibreglass Air Tech tanks? I thought they were illegal in Canada? Also, not sure what you mean by “lined”... like Por15 or Kreem?

AirTECH will line with an epoxy if you ask for it. Yes, the tanks are not approved. I ran mine for a season with no issues using Canadian premium fuel from Esso and Shell.

You want to run ethanol free fuel.

Okay, sorry for the wait. The overall width of the spacer and 2 bearings is 113.4mm. I measured this from the outer face of one bearing to a flat block covering the outer face of the opposite bearing with the depth end of a vernier. The bearings are 6302, which are 13mm wide according to the catalogue. Subtracting the bearings gives a spacer length of 87.4mm. ID is 15mm and OD should be around 18, but isn't critical. Shortening another bearing spacer would be easiest. A quick search for 6302 wheel bearing came up with these OEM part #'s (from Pivot Works website);
SUZUKI: 08123-63027
SUZUKI: 08144-63027
SUZUKI: 08153-63027
KAWASAKI: 601B6302U
KAWASAKI: 601B6302UU
YAMAHA: 93306-30212
YAMAHA: 93306-30212-00
YAMAHA: 93306-302Y1-00
HONDA: 96100-63020-10
HONDA: 96120-63020-10
HONDA: 96140-63020
HONDA: 96150-63020-10

Notice the number 6302 in all those part numbers.

Go to https://www.ronayers.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and search by part number, click "where used" to find bike models that used any of the above and get the associated spacer from the parts fiche. I punched in the Yamaha number and it came up with a bunch of V-Star models, which all have much wider rear wheels than the RZ. In this case the spacer is #2GV-25317-00-00 which is a safe bet to be longer than what you need and can be cut down and faced off in a lathe to the correct length.

Thx again... ended up I had a snowmobile suspension linkage bearing that was the correct inside and outside diameters. Cut it dow in a lathe and wheel is done except for an oil seal I’m waiting to come in... thx!!
